Angry Sub problems. Burning coil?

Ok This just started yesterday and is worse this morning... The sub is an Alpine Type R and the amp is an alpine MRP-1000. After playing for only 2 min at normal listening volume it gives off a smell. Now I have burnt coils in the past and I know what that smells like, however this is a different smell. It smells like the the sulfer from fireworks. I am not clipping my audio signal and have been running the same setup for over 6 months with no problems and this just started.

If it makes any difference the notes from 35-40Hz seem very weak and the notes from 40-55hz seem a LOT more peaky and a lot louder. Does anyone know what might be going on?

take the sub out and check the coils with a DMM. Set it to resistance and see what its reading. Could be the tinsel leads frying or at least thats what mine smelled like when it happened to me. However, you can't look at the leads on type r's because there hidden....
Edit: Beat me^^^.....

Fvck that really sucks. But I was gonna upgrade my sub anyways so I guess it works out. Thanks for the replies guys. Its a 15 not a 12 so its getting 250rms more than rated but its been handling it fine for so long. Ill take it out and take the DMM to it. What would cause the tinsel leads to do that? Hitting its mechanical limits? Because I dont hear any mechanical 'slapping'.
