Default a/d/s/ P640.2 vs. Denon DCA-800

Hey Guys,

I'm trying to figure out if I should keep my a/d/s/ P640.2 or to go with the Denon DCA-800. The are similarly rated, I believe the denon is 50wrms/ch and the a/d/s/ is 40wrms/ch, and they're both 6 channels. But the Denon has twice as much fusing as the a/d/s/. It also has won SQ awards in its day.

I'm going with the 6-ch so I can run a 2-way active front stage and rear fill from a single amp. You may say that the a/d/s/ is active capable, which is true, but I have an Alpine PXE-H650 already, so crossover capability is irrelevant to me.

In terms of SQ and power which should I go with? These will be powering a set of MB Quart QSD 160 and stock rear speakers.

ADS amps tend to be pretty conservatively rated and offer 1.2db of dynamic headroom which means they'll cleanly deliver ~120% power on dynamic material (e.g.; music) so they're a fair bit more powerful than they appear on paper.

It looks like not many people have experience with the Denon specifically, eh?

I've messed with the ones from the early '90's. They were pretty solid amps but I liked the PPI's and Orions from that era better.

So I take it that you would prefer the a/d/s/ over the Denon then?

No experience with the Denon's...only the a/d/s. P840.2 and P4100.2 are two of my favorite amps of all time. The tuning ability and the clean power of the a/d/s is tough to beat. I wanted a/d/s when I was in high school while everyone else was nuthugging JL Audio and Rockford Fosgate.

I ran a P840.2 in my '98 Chevrolet S-10 Ext. Cab. The following replaced 3x10" MTX Blue Thunder's (Circuit City special) and an Alpine Expert MRV-T505...a/d/s A6is active on channels 1-4, "40x4". 5-8 were bridge to two channels running a pair of 15" IDQ's in 1.75" ft^3 sealed each, "120x2". Baltic birch enclosure, AudioQuest Type 6 for the subs, AudioQuest twisted pair for the seperates, AudioQuest Sapphire RCA's, Nakamichi CD-45Z, PPI PAR-245.

Spent months working on this project with my dad only to have it stolen. I'll have to dig up pics of the enclosure and scan them to the computer. It was hands down the best sounding system I have ever owned.

Personally I went from my MD43 to an ADS PH15 running bridged on 1/2 and 3/4 to my front speakers and 5/6 stereo to my rears, it finally gets as loud as I need it.

Without having heard the Denon I can't say I'd take the PH15 over it or not but I know the ADS is a very clean amp. Mine's rated at 105dn s/n at full power. There aren't many amps that can deliver that.

It seems a/d/s/ has its reputation, but I guess the Denon is so little-used that no one really has any info about it.

Ah it seems that the Denon has quirky feature where the user must specify 2 ohms or 4 ohms per channel, and it looks like all the channels have to be driven at same impedance. That's a bit inconvenient for some folks who may have 2 ohm mids and 4 ohm tweeters. Even more inconvenient for me, since the QTD25 tweeters in my comp set are 6 ohm, and I'm running active. Well, that just about answers my question then.
