Default Why are my two Alphas louder with the ports sealed off?

I've got my two alpha 15's in 4 cubes each separate chambers with a single 6" X 11" aeroport in each chamber. When just playing music ANY lower note sounds terrible, it's like not sound at all it's just sub moving. When i shove a towel in the port it hits the lows better and the highs are louder...

What is wrong with my tuning? I was told that a 6 inch diameter aeroport (11 inches long) in 4 cubes would be roughly 36hz. Am i THAT far off? Trying to get it worked out today... second day of scrapin.

Also i heard that you need at least the diameter of the port away from the back wall (so 6" away from the back of my box) for it to be accurate. Mine isn't, it's maybe 2-3 tops. How bad would that change things?

When you "seal it off" it probably gives it a chance to actually play those lower notes. When you have the port normal it's tuned too high to hit the lows. Try tuning like 30-32hz, and you will love it.

yes having it 2-3" away from the back will def. effect it.. thats to close for comfort, can probably get away with 4", but no less... try making something like a speaker ring, and mount it behing the port mount, so the port is extended from the box... use like 2-3 pieces of MDF, that will give you an extra 1.5-2.25"

With so many variables it's hard to tell you what's really going on.{is your tuning correct?}{if your aeroports are 11" from flare to flare or flare to cut end, you might actually be tuned at 38hz or even higher}

[props to the original poster of this depiction on another forum]

If your box is tuned at 36hz, it will not be very efficient below 30hz. If the music you are playing is hitting 30 hz and below, even if you tuned at 30hz, it will still be louder sealed.
The simple truth is that sealed enclosures are better suited for frequencies less than 35hz.
Ported enclosures put up louder numbers at frequencies above 35hz.
Another issue is your subsonic filter setting. I recommend setting it 5hz below your tuning frequency.

it's ok to like it as a sealed box.
You may want to seal it in a way you can remove the block offs in the event you find a TL to play with.

Not sure I really agree with that.
