Exclamation New recone... smoked..... seized....

Pretty sad right now. I recently reconed 2 custom 18" hdc3 motors with some aluminum recones. So tonight since they had cured for a few days I decided to throw one in my test box (6.2 cubes @ 34) and hooked it up to an MB quart 1500 @ 1ohm

Turned the volume on 1, little bass, nice.. volume 5, more bass ... nice. Sounded perfect, no mechanical noise ( i expected some as the sub is inverted), played a few songs then turned it up, barely got the cone moving playing a Rise Against cd and the ****er started smelling, not like a voice coil cooking like Ive smelt before... and then she lets out a puff of smoke and no more bass....

I cut the amps as fast as I could but it was to late, shes cooked.

So I unbolted the sub form the box and the sub smells like arse, nothing on it is "hot" though, Only part I could feel was even slightly warm was inside the pole vent

I can still move the cone in and out, but its tough, its defientely binding on something, tight on all sides.

Since the sub was a fresh recone and I was kinda skeptical when I recieved the recones.... I dunno what to say..

Would like to hear what you guys think, Im almost scared to put the other sub with the same recone in the test box to see what it does......

Sounds like the coil came unwound...

Ive never really had a sub fail on me so I dont know but my symptoms point to that?

Didnt have 15 minutes on it, and volume never went past 13-14 out of 40, she was supposed to be able to take 3k daily

No offense but I saw the pics of your soldeing ability so to straightup blame the recone is kinda pre mature. I mean I screwed up my first recone.

I redid that solder job, I bought a 50watt gun and the proper flux, end result came out perfect and solid

Why would that cause this anyways??

thats possible, but I did clean with air and tape and visually inspect before dropping in the cone, so I doubt it, but why would it smoke??

Abou the debris in the gap, the subs were inverted, and you can visually see the coil form the outside.. could it have sucked something in or am I missing something..

ssacckett built the recone for me, there was some problems with it and it not really being what I originally orderred, but he assured me it would work fine with my hdc3 motor
