Underhung motors have a thick top plate and the plate of ferrite is at the very bottom of the motor.
Its supposed to be gear towards sound quality as it eliminates harmonics. In a sub application its rare to see and I wouldn't be too worried about the harmonics. But its common in midbass/midrange.

The coil is shorter than top plate heigh, and thus shouldn't leave the gap at any point. Overhung has coil longer than top plate height.

An underhung woofer is more common than you think lol. The IA Flatlyne is underhung, the old re xxx was, the eD 13Av.2, the Audiomobile Mass 2012, Aura 1808/TC 5100, Soundstream reference R1, Crystal CMP12X, eD A7-450 and its 15" Counterpart, etc etc lol.

There are threads at smd, diyma, ca, etc that go in Detail! They generally need alot of strength because the tall top-plates and they are pricey. Xbl2 on re xxx is a little different too. The tiny coil they use will lead to a very low inductance and 2nd hand harmonic distortion.
