Default subwoofer spec question

How exactly does voice coil size correlate to sunwoofer performance? Is it only about coling or does it help with SQ or SPL?

to my knowledge coil size itself, in terms of diameter, just limits/predicates the thermal capacity

That's what I assumed. Looking around for subs and came across some good looking subs but they only have a 2" aluminum coil

the bigger diam. the coil, the longer the copper rite?
which im just guessing here, but more copper would handle more rms/heat...?

good question here, got me to thinking out loud,

Lol. That's what I'm here for. I'm trying to decide if I want to get 4-500rms subs and run off the amp I have or get another zx2500 and run 4-1000rms subs. Just looking at options

Voice coil diameter, layers, and type of metal dictate thermal handling partially. You could have a killer 4 inch coil, but if your motor has no cooling, it wouldn't work very well for a daily driver.

Would you consider a 2" VC too small for a 12" or 15" sub?

You would also need a shitton of power to make use of it as an SPL driver. 4" coils are basically worthless, imo, except for in the highest of high power setups. 3" coils are (generally) better for SPL due to lower mass...

Not if it's designed properly...

Looking at Earthquake DBXi. Tons of excursion but doesn't appear to have much authority. My whole thing is that if I can get what I'm looking for out of 4-500 watt subs it will save me a ton on batteries and another amp. The plan is to add another zx2500 and 4 FI Q's. Its not going to be for any kind of competition. I just love loud clear music. If I can save an extra $2k I'll be thrilled but I don't want to settle for less. I'm looking for deep powerful bass that I can feel. My 2-12's tickle my hair, but at the same time they're in a pre fab box. I need to build a proper enclosure first and go from there. Lol

Can't complain with that. Almost all of the big numbers are put down with 3 inch coils. I am however curious to see how the HDC4 comes into play, and some of the 4hp and the Rival subs are not bad at all for a 4 inch coil either.
