Default advice i got on batteries

so i have a battery guy that comes to my work. he advised me against buying an agm mainly because the failure rate due to the way they charge. i decided to go the route of a group 31 deep cycle. im gonna put it in the back, build a battery box and vent it through the floor. the cost of the battery new is less than half the cost of an agm.

so does anybody think this is a bad idea.

do we think what you did was a bad idea? or do we think using an AGM is a bad idea? if the first question, its your choice; if it works for you it shouldn't matter what people think. if its the second, then i disagree. i use my XS power battery as my primary and only battery for a year now and love it to death.

agm are king among batteries, thats why there made. What he suggested isn't bad but agm are better then just a non-sealed deep cycle

Not really a bad idea per-say. Maybe bad advise though. Any battery that is not properly maintained will fail. AGM is simply a different technology then standard flooded lead acid batteries.
AGM requires specfic charging voltage different than lead acid. That said most people don't know this or are to cheap to buy the proper equipment to maintain them.
The advantages to using AGM over standard battery far out-way the cost differance IMHO.

I think it's probably because that sub is not moving enough to allow it to cool.. Id turn the gain up a bit so it moves more for cooling reasons.. That's why it's hard on subs to be underpowered..

It's a bad idea if those Flooded lead acid batteries aren't vented outside. They release hydrogen gas and can go boom.

I'm gonna go out on a limb here and say I think your "battery dude" has only dealt with optimas and has very little education regarding other AGM batteries like Odyssey, Stinger, XS Power, or Kinetik.

Manufacturing companies have used AGM batteries in tractors, forklifts and other heavy duty equipment for many years. They do because AGMs are more reliable and need no maintenance.

I believe I would rather have one AGM than two normal batteries.

I have yellow top optimas personally. They work but I doubt I'll buy them again because there are better options available.

I despise red tops.

I use 4 batcaps in my vehicle. I have jump several old schools. 3 of my batteries are almost 3 years old now. They all together sit at 12.8-12.9. And they get severely abused because I don't have a h/o alt yet.

Point being, there are many good AGM batteries that will work well in your application.

D3400 as my main battery now for around a year. Never had a single issue with it! Usually guys like that only know of the "mainstream" brands and will always bet against a brand/different technology than what they're useto! It's like going into a car audio place and they don't know or heard of a IA death penalty, nightshade, heavyweight etc.!!
