Default quick ? bout battery wiring...need quick answer

i have 3 total batts. 1 starting and 2 c&d in the trunk. how should the c&ds be arranged as far as wiring. im thinking the batt closest to starting batt should get the 1 pos run from the front and be the one to supply all the negs to the amps, then have the 3rd batt get a jumper pos from the 2nd batt, have the main ground ran to it and run a grnd jumper to the 2nd batt, and be the one to supply all the pos runs to the amps since its the last batt in sequence......so to sum it up should the last in sequence supply the pos pwr and the first in sequence(in the trunk) supply the neg runs to amps?

after chking out an online calculator....should i leave the one c&d batt as is which is connected to starting batt, main rear ground, and supplying both amps with pos and neg runs. then add the 3rd batt in by running a pos and neg jumper from the 2nd batt. BTW the 3rd batt is much smaller in size and aH than the rest until i can afford bigger.

Well, it doesn't matter as long as you have good wire or busses between them.

But here's what I do... Positive run from the front to the first back batt. Then positive jumper from 1st to 2nd back batt and run my power from the 2nd. Unless I have dual inputs. In that case I use one power lead from each batt.

And if you can, I always ground both batts with thier own lead. Even if it's to the same spot.

Honestly, they're all on the same "buss." So, the order and placement really doesn't matter

Well in a sense it does. This actually happened 3 days ago.

A kid I know had a bank of 8 batts. 3 Alts and 4 runs. He ran everything from the Alts to the first batt on the bank, then he tied the Amp right into the same terminal as the alts on that first battery. Well he had an amp input voltage meter and a bank voltage meter. Amp was reading 14.6 while the bank was reading 12.2. Kinda strange huh?

He had been having problems with his voltage dropping TERRIBLY just off one amp (down to the 9-10s). So I helped him out, told him to run the amp and the alts off atleast opposite ends if not in the middle of the battery rack. Come to find out, the last 6 batts in the rack werent even seeing a full charge!! When he swapped to the way I told him to, all problems went away.

As a rull of thumb for myself, I always charge and discharge at opposite ends as much as possible, so it pulls in a chain through all batts. OR when I have multiple runs and a huge bank like I do right now, I dont connect all positives to one battery, i stagger them throughout the bank as well as grounds. My amp being dual inputs I also stagger the power/ground input wire to different points in the bank.

I can see it becoming more of an issue with larger banks, but with only 2 back up batts, it really shouldn't matter.

As far as your friend with the voltage problems. That sounds like undersized busses to me. You can't carry (7) batts worth of amperage through 1/0 jumpers. Or even decent sized aluminum buss bars. Aluminum busses are good for 700A per sq in of cross section, so unless he had some gangster buss bars or multiple 1/0 jumpers, he's still not utilizing all of his reserve even powering at the opposite end. He might be charging evenly that way, but he's leaving amperage on the table.

oook so i think i got it now, at least until i can afford more batts. i ran the charging pos to the bigger batt in the the bank and ran a jumper pos to the smaller batt in the bank, then i grounded both batt with seperate runs to the same grounding spot and now have both pos and neg runs to the amp from the bigger batt. so basically i just added some reserve to the bigger batt. later on when i can get either more batts or 2 matching bigger batts i will run the amps pos off of the last batt in the bank and the charging wire to the first batt in the bank....**now or later, does it matter which batt i run the negatives to the amps from?**
