Default Pre/Pro Vs. AVR??

What are some advantages and disadvantages of getting a Pre/pro combo instead of getting a receiver?
Is a pre/pro combo needed if Im not running $2,000 speakers?
Im really liking Emotiva's products, but cant justify spending $1,500 if a $600 Onkyo AVR will do me just fine.
Ready..

Pre pros are generally not necessary. The processing in avrs from reputable brands are plenty good enough. A lot of guys actually use their avr as the Pre if it has preouts. There are plenty of good avrs like the 7s and 8s from onkyo, marantz, pioneer, Denon, etc. also if you get one with audessy then setup and Ewing is a breeze. What speakers are you running and what's their power requirements? If you need 200+ watts then an avr will not suffice. Also, while Emotiva makes GREAT amps for a great price their prepros have had a lot of issue and I'd stay away. Outlaw seems to have a more reliable product, but back to the point again just using an avr as your prepro won't cost any more, likely give you more expand ability, and offer great room correction and eqing like audessy and whatever pioneers new one is called.

I'd highly recommend Harman Kardon receivers. They are very easy to operate and have great features. Denon and Marantz are good too, but less user friendly.

I have tested that amp about a bazillion times. I know what it does clean, clipped, dirty, loaded, unloaded, wired down, low voltage, good voltage, after it hot, while it's cool, on caps, on batts, where it protects, what's thermal limits are and just about anything else anyone would care to know about it.

But thanks for chiming in. Your opinion is duly noted.

Integra (pro grade onkyo with more connections), onkyo, or a denon will work more than great.
