Default Factory Car Stereo Question

Is there any way to hook up a factory car head unit in your home? I've seen people use an old computer PSU to run a car stereo system in their home in place of an actual stereo. So I was just wondering if I could use a factory head unit in the same way rather than using an aftermarket one? Thanks

you can but it's just not worth the effort. you'll need to get the factory plug for the head unit than identify all the wires. you can get an aftermarket head unit from Bestbuy for $60 and save all the time of locating a factory plug and than researching and identifying all the stock wire. plus the aftermarket unit will probably even have a remote.

search for a receiver in the craigslist electronics section. you'll be happier having an actual home receiver.

I have done that. You need a ac to dc power supply...12 VDC 17A 200W Regulated Switching Power Supply 320-3149 or a 12 volt battery.
IMO you could score a old tuner amplifier cheaper than the power supply at a yard sale or CL. I just found a 1977 pioneer with built in graphic EQ for 25 bucks at a yard sale and a techniques tuner amplifier for 20 bucks. You get several inputs IE: phono CD tape. Plus you don't need to buy a auto antenna or amp. But the wall of sound in the garage has the cool factor going for it

Well if your set on the ac to dc power then here's the exact place i got mine,

110V 120V 220V 240V AC to DC Converter 12V 30A | eBay

then I run that to a 4 channel amp that has equalizers, then off of it i have 2 auxiliary cords running into a 2 to 1 audio cable that plugs into my laptop.

I only did this for the fact that the only thing I didn't already have was that 25$ power converter. Otherwise if you're starting from scratch just get a receiver...

And why you see people using a computer PSU is because it converts wall power into 12 volts. A car headunit only needs, a ground, 12v power, and remote turn on ( also 12v ). After that it's a matter of either running off headunit power, or hook up an amplifier to it.

x2. I've seen a few here and there as little as 25-50 bucks. People wanna get rid of their "junk".

Even garage sales are sometimes a hit.

I run an xplod in my shop off of an xbox power supply brick. Ive ran it this was for the last 3 years and is also pretty kick ass when the power goes out and u hook up a batt if you dont feel like hearing a generator! Strip back the cord coming from the brick, twist the two smaller wires together these turn it on, the other two are the +-.

Just FYI, I've had my JVC receiver which is now in my garage as a garage stereo since high school. Bought it in early 90's. And still works to this day. Paid 200 for it. Only thing that went out was a fuse inside it blew.
