Default Connecting sub to home receiver

About to head over to my girl's parents house, they said that they are having trouble with the sub. It's a phoenix gold sub in a home theater box, has an amp on the back. They have it wired with the rca into the receiver. It'll come on with the receiver, but will make no music. They said it'll make a loud hum for 5 minutes, then it'll go away.

So they asked if I could bring over a speaker and try it out. They said that there is not a mono sub inputs for bare wire, only a mono banana plug. Is there a way I could hook up bare wire to the mono input? I've really never done home audio so it's a little foreign to me. Thanks!

there should be a sub out on the receiver and u use a single rca style cable like this and connect it to the sub AMP. my geuss is if it makes a hum noise and then goes away the amp has a problem. or loose connection. i know mine will hum LOUD if the subwoofer cable is hardly making a connection.

Check your connections. Then pull the sub out and see if you're getting voltage out of the amp and check the coil on the sub.

The sub output is sometimes labeled as "LFE" on the receiver.
