Default Buying new streamer

I'm buying a new TV that will be 4K so I want a streamer capable of streaming in 4K so i have narrowed it down to the new roku 4 or the new nVidia streamer. I have a roku 3 now and am happy with it it has never let me down but if the nvidia is more capable I would like to give it a try, does anyone have experience with either?

I use old PCs attached to every TV (Linux Mint with a small video card makes most ~$120ish Newegg refurb ones plays DTS full 1080 via HDMI flawless ), but that Nvidia looks sweet to me. I know the Roku is solid too but I thought the Nvidia gave more gaming options, I could be mistaken though.

One thing to remember is the diff in 4k vs 1080 is Extremely hard to tell unless you view at less than 7' IIRC. I'll look for the link to show you but IMO 4K is just a way for TV manufacturers to try to milk us for our $.

Here is the article based on your viewing distance, interesting reading IMO.
The 'last years model sales' on a 1080 ~may~ net you an exact same picture with more features @ lower cost.

That is interesting. That's how they look so much better in the store is because you are so close to them. Although my tv sits right at the foot of my bed. This was the tv I was looking to get, maybe I'll scrap the 4K idea.

4k is only useful if you are doing graphic design or something where you NEED that extra space on one screen, imo

what do you have now? Size and resolution wise? And refresh rate.

Load up a blue ray rip of a movie and put it on a flash drive and play it those demo tv's with 1080p.

but, they set all the expensive tv's settings so they look better. So that's why you probably want that 4k tv.

don't get vizio, lol...

get a decent 1080p. Or wait till prices fall on 4k.

don't get the latest technology, ever.

I'm still waiting for 1080p prices to drop so I can upgrade my 19" to a 27" monitor.

I don't even have a tv, I just load movies and whatever series i want to watch into vlc player. I have like 4 htpc remotes so no lack of control from afar

I'm guessing you actually watch tv through a cable box though.

With the Sony tv we have, we can connect to wifi and I can share folders on any computer connected to the same router and view then on the tv. But make sure the tv has wifi built in or if it's wifi ready, make sure it accepts a cheap dongle, and not a $80 proprietary one like most do.

right now I have a 32" vizio razor lcd/led 1080 60hz and it has been a great tv for the last 5 years. The only tv's I will own are vizio and Samsung. The tv I'm looking it is a smart tv but I would rather use a streamer as they are faster, I use a program called plex that streams movies from my computer to my roku. Yes I do use a cable box we have U verse in every room. I have a 27" 1080 120hz asus monitor, interested? Maybe I'll go 4K for my graphics card and monitor too.

Is visio good? So many off brands popping up...hard to keep track.

I had a samsung 50" 1080p 60hz and it was great for gaming and htpc. Wish I kept it but I needed the money at the time (and I got it free)

I am definitely interested in that monitor! Especially at 120hz.

We have 4 vizios and 2 samsungs in my house and all work great the 48" 1080, 120hz, vizio smart tv in the living room has the best picture by far and ran about $400. The only issue I have seen with any of the vizios was my sisters 32" vizios hdmi ports stopped reading after about 5 years I called vizio they directed me to a local repair spot of theirs and it was fixed in a day for free. We will see if I decide to upgrade my monitor or not I just spent $400 on the asus like 6 months ago.
