Default Denon a good brand?

Found this 14 channel receiver at goodwill for $30

I checked all channels to make sure they worked.

I'm looking forward to setting up a sweet surround sound for my HTPC.

Whoops. 7 channel. Guess I counted the grounds at first

Hoping this will work with the 5 3.5mm outputs on my motherboard. Or 4 I guess. One is line in and another is mic in.

Denon is good, you scored a good deal. 5 x 80 watts is plenty for basic HT. I'd shoot for optical S/PDIF connection so you use the receiver's processing vs a sh*tty motherboard on-board audio.

Nice!

I have an older Denon (early 90's maybe) and it was a great performer (I rebuilt the main channels for a guy but he never came and got it). I used it for a few years but I'm not big into surround sound so I set it up for my moms computer with some bookshelf speakers, lol.

Yeah I'd be more inclined to use the digital inputs if possible since it has them, but your motherboard outputs should be able to get some sound going.

Great score though and Denon is a good brand!

Keep us posted how it works out.

My last good home audio type score, but from a guy on CL; he was giving a away a free Velodyne F-1500 sub and top of the line (in its day) Onkyo TX-SV919THX home theater receiver to anyone who showed up to his yard sale the following morning, both pretty nice units back in the early 90's.

The sub we had a hard time getting in my backseat, . Both needed minor repair (why they were free) and I've since been using them for a couple years with my computer setup. I only do 2 channel + sub as I'm not big into home theater multi channel anymore and mainly listen to music. The built in amps are very nice, but I don't use them, only the preamp outputs into a pair of Audioengine A5's that I got for a bargain at a thrift store.

I have a denon which all my components go through, cable box, xbox, apple tv. Like it but can never figure out what I am doing wrong with the speakers. Its a 7 channel I only have front two, center, and sub hooked up. Have speakers for the rears, but no sound comes out.

you sure you arent selected to bi-amp the speakers? there should be speaker selections in the settings.

Thanks for the replies guys.

Apparently my motherboard has spdif built in. So I just need that single optical cable for complete surround sound?

You gotta play with the plethora of settings it has. It's a pita.

Yes, and movie wise MPC-HC with AC-3 filter will be good players. I run my Onkyo off my computer this way and anything it can't decode on it's own the ac3 filter transforms to something it can. I have HDMI but same idea with optical.
