Hi, I'm currently in Charleston, SC but I'm moving to Saratoga Springs, NY in about a week.
I've been into car audio for a little over two years but didnt really dive into it till about 6-8 months ago. Im passionate about audio systems of all kinds. I went to school for audio and video production/broadcasting which got me interested in pro audio installations, but thats all I will say about that since its slightly off topic.
Back to car audio. I started with a 2000 Acura TL (which I still have) with the stock Bose system.
First I started with a crappy 12in MTX of some kind in a prefab ported box with a Pioneer GM-5400 pushing ~300 watts
Then I switched out the MTX for an old school 12in Kicker Comp in the same box with the same amp. The Kicker was old though and crapped out on me.
Then I replaced the Kicker and the prefab box with a 12in McCaulley in a custom ported wedge. McCaulley is a pro audio company based out of the Seattle area. The speaker was really meant for midrange in a 2 or 3 way cabinet with a horn or something. I thought it sounded good at the time.
Then I finally got around to upgrading the rest of the system with
Alpine CDE-123 H/U
Polk 5250 components up front
stock speakers in the back
Alpine MRP F300 4ch
Alpine MRP M1000 monoblock
Then I found a Memphis 12in C3 in a prefab vented box with a Memphis Power Reference 1000w monoblock for the price of the Alpine mono, so I sold the Alpine. I loved the C3 running 600w at 2ohm but it just wasnt enough.
So then I bought two Skar VVX-12's from a friend, and found the highest quality custom box I have ever seen. 3/4in MDF with a double baffle, single aero port, and the ENTIRE inside of the box was completely sealed with a layer of epoxy. The guy that built it ran 2 SA12's on 3k watts and the box handled it like a champ.
I ran the Skars on the Memphis amp at 1000 watts, and it sounded AMAZING. Now I refuse to go back to overpriced main stream companies.
I am currently running two Skar VVX-8's in a sealed box on a Skar SK800.1. So far I'm impressed by the performance of the 8's but I miss the 12's
I'm considering changing to 10's with same box and amp or switching to an AQ1200D
So thats the history of my system, still running stock battery and alternator, although the stock alternator in the TL's is 100 amps
(give or take 10 amps, cant remember exactly)
I like to think I know what I'm talking about but I probably don't, and I like to learn as much as I can. I'm going to be looking for a couple of 10's once I get to NY, probably some SA10's or similar, and looking to sell my skar 8's so let me know if you've got connections in that area.
