Default New to site, car alarm questions

I am looking for advice on purchasing an alarm system for my otruck. I recently purchased a 2003 Suburban Z71. It loaoks brand new both inside and out. I would like to keep it that way. Having had nice trucks before, I know they are high on the list for being stolen or broken into. I have had it happen before.

I am looking to put an alarm system in this vehicle. I have been to Car Toys and seen the Audiovox system. A local shop carries SkyTek systems. I am looking to spend about $300 - $400 or so on a system with install. It looks like from reading on-line reviews that my money would be better spent on a Viper system. I am thinking the Viper 5704 as the system is in my price range. I will have to find an installer.

I am told by both the SkyTek dealer and Car Toys that I will need an actuator for the door locks. The only accessory my truck does not currently have is keyless entry. The locks are electric. One place wants $40 and the other $70 for the actuator.

I really do not care about the remote start as I doubt I would use it. I like the two way function of all of the systems.

I am seeing the Viper 5704 on eBay for about $190 but these are reconditioned units that carry full factory warranty. Do I need to look for only new systems or is a reconditioned one okay to buy?

Which system should I get? I want to get the best system for my money.

Any insight you can provide would be very helpful

Thanks!

I have the Viper 5902 installed on my 02 Tahoe, and i didnt use any actuators for my locks. I did use some diodes to isolate the doors. The only thing the locks required were a relay, maybe thats what your thinking of. I did the install on my truck and it wasnt terrible at all. The 12volt.com is a great source of info. Also there is another website that offers wire color/location info, i think its called modified something. Ill have to find it.

Thank you for the quick reply. I am going to have it installed for me. I would screw up something if I did it myself. I may be calling the actuator a relay. I know both shops have told me I would have to have it.

I guess my main concern is which alarm system to go with for the money I have to spend on it. Best Buy has a Viper 350 for about $300 installed. I just want to get the best system I can for the money. I am looking at Amazon and eBay to find a system to purchase. I would hopefully have the local shop put it in. I don't know if they will do it since I would be buying a system from another place. (They sell SkyTek).

Any info you can give me in my purchasing decision would be greatly appreciated!

I personally love my Viper, it does everything I want it to do with a lot more options as well. It has a supposed 1 mile radius( dont know about the actual distance), lots of add ons, has like 4 auxillary outputs as well. Id definitely buy another one. Actually looking at putting remote start on the wife's Trailblazer.

Default Viper 350 Responder

I am looking at getting the Viper 350 Responder. Best Buy has it for $299 installed. Is this a good system? I obviously want the best protection for my money. I have looked at the Audiovox and SkyTek systems and they are more expensive. From what I am reading about systems, the Viper seems to be the best system. I want the 2 way pager which this system has. Any thoughts before I make my purchase?

Thanks!
