Hey all. Came across this site searching for toys online... seemed worth a shot.
20 years ago, I wrecked my VW Rabbit - a tree got in the way of my car at 70kph. Had all the goodies. Pheonix gold. Audio control. MB Quart. Altec Lansing. Alpine. Nicely laid out and installed. 139db SPL. New alternators every 4-6 months. 2 weekends prior to the accident.. I had spent about 35 some hours revamping my setup layout in the hatch. I was pretty impressed with the final result.
Ripped all the gear out. Sat on it. Eventually sold it to a buddy. Still have the 2 PG 12s in an isobaric box.. actually use them as a home theater sub
Fast forward 20 years to today... kinda got the bug back again! Made a nice chunk of cash this summer working retarded hours.
Replaced VW OEM deck with an new Excelon Kenwood double din-er. Used JBL GTO 300.1 amp. New Audio Control Epicenter. New 8in Fosgate sub. Bought a new vehicle specific sub enclosure for the rear left wheel arch area. Used 8awg power wire. New RCAs. Had a couple of new fuse holders laying around.
In the end, it's a very subtle setup. OEM speakers sound good to me, for now. Need the hatch area of my TDI as my car is my office for work. Can't afford to give up hatch cargo space for a huge sub box. Need the spare tire, so can't use the spare well. That sub enclosure and where it fits, is darn perfect!
Perhaps next year, I'll upgrade the OEM speakers, stick on some sound deadening stuff and add an amp for the 4 corners. Space being a premium, the Kenwood Excelon Xr400-4 is what I'm eyeballing. DB6501 Polks are looking like a good bang for the buck to me.
In the end, not going for records. Not spending a fortune. Just making my office better!
Even the winter beater is getting a little love. Just a little. Slapping in an 8in powered sub this weekend, under the passenger seat. Ordered a Soundstream Epicenter knock off.. and still got leftover power wire from the good summer car.
Cars are worse than drugs.
