Default howdy

greetings from Wisconsin. I'm an amateur hobbyist who likes old school car audio. Teaching myself to re-foam, solder and repair old subs. Just for my pleasure!

yeah, that's a pretty rare one, indeed.

if it were 3 years ago, i live close enough (n/e wisco/il border) to have possibly provided you with quality old school parts from gefco, eminence, stanford acoustics, and nu-way, but the megabitch screwed me in divorce. i had old school parts for daaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaays.

there are some old-schoolers still here, like myself that prefer to diy everything as to immerse ourselves in every facet of the hobby, but not enough to source out an available driver like that.... other online audio communities can help you with that, but with quality information and sources comes audio-snobs and elitists, which is why ive been frequenting this site exclusively since 2008.

Default blue thunder

I am not an elitist. Just a guy teaching myself to fix old subs. I dont know why but I have no interest in newer gear. I have 3 of those 12 ohm subs and one of them sounds scratchy when I gently push on the cone. So Im going to take the surround off, pop off the dustcap, shim it and refoam it and hope for the best. Two 12 ohm subs are pointless and I was really wanting 3 old MTX 10's for a while, which is why I'm bent on doing my best to fix it. I'm not giving up yet!

ehh, wasnt referring to you in the slightest, but i guess i could have worded it better, lol.

sounds like coil rub induced by a stretched/worn out spider tbh, at least, considering the symptoms,.. that's the strongest starting point in assessing mechanical anomalies, imo,.. especially when its just one single spider landing being used.

im just throwing out thoughts to consider as i wouldnt want to see you destroy something like that if it could possibly be rectified.

Well, the spider looks great. How else would I go about even assessing the situation if I don't take off the dust cap and surround? The way I see it, because its nearly impossible to find a replacement speaker, I might as well just try to fix it myself. I have a 10 second clip of the scratchy sub and showed it to a few guys, first guy said maybe a shifted motor. In any case, my tri box and subs are useless if one of them doesn't work, so I might as well learn something

if you remove the cap and look for the contact point between the coil and (most likely) t-yoke when you push on the cone, you can determine where the spider is possibly failing as it could be an isolated area, or one point of failure lends to another.

at this point, it sounds like you'll have to do something drastic if the surround isnt the culprit, so i dont see the harm in trying new things if it's going to be replaced or put into the realm of misfit toys upon not working out.

i brushed on a layer of liquid latex to all 4 of the woofer spiders in my allison al-120 home speakers when they started doing this. had to pull the cones up and affix them to run a straight edge (in my case, dental floss) across the top of the spiders to get them back to oem position before the application, but after it cured, the latex kept the spider from deviating back to the worn out condition and mechanical noise i just saved them from.

just one of my experiences i got lucky with trying out for the first time, had to share.
