Default Looking to buy a used car, need opinions

hi guys,

I'm planning some stuff for 2012 and i'm looking to buy a simple car in the US just to move around when I'm up visiting.

Been looking at craigslist and came across some 90s (91-95) Lexus LS 400.

Any guys have experience with this car as a daily ride ( just to move around)? how's the reliability ?

Also, i keep seeing this " salvage" title on craiglist, what does this mean?

Also, what other things do i need to look at? ( ie registration and things like that )

Car will be parked at my friend's place in CA when i'm not in the US ( he'll be free to use it)

Thanks in advance guys

Cheers!

i had a friend that had that same early 90's lexus. i wouldnt get any older lexus' she had quite a few problems and they were pricey to fix. i would look around for a honda civic or something along those lines. a salvage could mean differnt things. such as the car was in an accident and accumulated more damage than it was worth ( frame damage, etc...) or it was stolen and recoverd.

Also if you register it here in cali, expect to pay 10% for taxes. But usually if you buy a car private party and ask the seller to write down a lower selling price, you will pay less in taxes. Registration depends on the vehicle i believe. You pay it once a year. Also i dont know if you are familiar with the smog laws here. But MAKE SURE THE SELLER SMOGS THE CAR BEFORE YOU PURCHASE IT!

if you have any questions feel free to pm me man since i live in cali, i would be glad to help.

Salvage title can mean any number of things from an accident to flood damage.

When I was looking at a good reliable used car, I went with an older Saturn. I got it cheap off of CL and it has been flawless for my 30K of ownership. It now has 157K on it and there are stories of them lasting in to the 300K mileage. Everything works on mine including the A/C, I paid $1500 for it two years ago.

what does SMOG mean? like an emission test?

Also, usually how much is registration?

Down here in Singapore, its called " Road tax" and its based on your engine size ( we got crazy car regulations down here)

thats exactly what it is, and if you purchase a car, and it doesnt pass smog then you are basically screwed unless the seller is a cool guy and will buy it back or make it pass. It doesnt matter who does it just as long as its done within 30 days of doing a title transfer.

You can't go wrong with a Honda.

I don't think you can find a worse place to base your car out of than Cali given their restrictions on emissions... but then that is only a generalization.

it's good to hear you will be spending enough time in the states to make owning a car worthwhile.
