Default How to help with anxiety?

Hey guys, you all have good advice it seems so im looking for a little bit of help. My girlfriend gets anxiety really bad sometimes to the point of her crying or even her body going numb. We both have anxiety i just have found ways to ignore it, or cope with it most of the time, i still have my moments though, especially when im hung over. Anyways i just want to be able to help her because it stress' me out to see her like that and not being able to do anything about it, usually i can tell when shes starting to get it and i can talk about something random and keep her mind focused on something other than her anxiety and it goes away, but i cant always stop it. She has been prescribed klonopin and xanax in the past but refuses to take any type of pill because she gets anxiety from taking pills because she is afraid of what they will do to her and she doesn't want to become dependent on them ( which i dont blame her for it makes perfect sense ). I guess all im asking is what you guys do to relax yourselves when having anxiety, what little remedies and tricks help you? Anxiety is a common thing and im sure most people on this site experience it or have experienced it before.

I have anxiety as well... cant even hardly go to school because of it. I cannot present anything in class.. and Ive had to drop classes because of it. Im not sure what to do to relax either. Ill make sure to check back here for what others say

My ex wife used to get real bad anxiety attacks and the only thing that used to help her when I was around was to hold her and play with her hair...it was one of those things that just relaxed her almost to the point of sleep. Now of course everyone's body is different and reacts differently to the same thing but if you haven't tried that yet it may be worth a shot. I'm no doctor and I've not been through it so I'm speaking out of no experience whatsoever but I would think that anxiety is caused by a mental stimulation and the body tenses up because of it. Maybe something to keep her mind occupied right before it sets in?

Wish I had more help to offer...good luck to you man! Nothing worse than seeing the one you are with suffering...that feeling of helplessness is something awful!

benzodiazapines.i get bad attacks and it feels like im gonna have a heart attack.xanax helps alot.its not for everyone though.some dont like to take drugs

When getting bad anxiety drinking cool water and fresh air helps me.

I deal with anxiety every day of my life for the past 5 years or more now. I hate it.

I've actually gone to a doctor for it before, but just quit going because of the expense, and feeling like I was getting no where with it. I've had anxiety attacks bad enough before, that I thought I was seriously having a heart attack. Bad thing was, it was right after I was put on blood pressure meds, so I couldn't tell if it was the meds, or the attacks. Took me a little while, but I finally figured out it was the anxiety. For me, when it happens, it's usually when I'm pretty stressed, and pissed off. I usually just sit down, close my eyes, and focus on something else for little while, and maybe do some counting. Sounds dumb, I know, but it works for me. The biggest thing when you have one, is once you figure out what's triggering, is to stop focusing so hard on it, and think about something else. I know it also sounds dumb, but you could start researching some meditation techniques, and practice some of those. It's the same principle basically, and will also help you to focus a little better.

Same here. I was prescribed escitalopram and I took it for a little over a month 2x a day and it made my anxiety worse if anything.
