Default Opening a shop?

I found this local shop that just came up for rent. It's $1250 a month plus utilities. 4000sq ft, 800sq ft office. For the past few months I've been contemplating with my dad opening one, but don't have the ability financially to start it off . Once it was open and going, I'm confident I could profit and keep it thriving. I've thought about asking a few family members to invest a few hundred for the first couple months until everything was up and running. Currently my only income is during the summer about 400 a week, which goes into my builds, and during school, installs on the sides for people. Locally we only have a couple Audio shops that carry crappy brands/overcharge by Alot. I know prices go up when having rent and such, but around here, it's rediculous.

Eventually a Bass Battles show would be in order.

What are you guys' thoughts about opening a shop? Have you ever debated it/done it? Succeeded? Failed? Looking for experience, tips/tricks, business advice.....

I have tested that amp about a bazillion times. I know what it does clean, clipped, dirty, loaded, unloaded, wired down, low voltage, good voltage, after it hot, while it's cool, on caps, on batts, where it protects, what's thermal limits are and just about anything else anyone would care to know about it.

But thanks for chiming in. Your opinion is duly noted.

a few hundred bux here and there... idk if you could be sucessful with that...

keep in mind you need to hold in hand at least basics... installation accessories, headunits, door speakers, boxes... then the manufactures want a bulk buy done... you can just order 1 headunit at a time from alpine... they want a bulk 5k or so startup... (jsut example)

it aint easy at all.

and everyone wants deals

It takes quite a bit of capital to get a shop up and running. in order to become a dealer for some manufacturers they may require a minimum order. Lets say you picked up5-6 different product lines to cover head units, amps, speakers, subs, install accessories and batteries. you could be looking at $10-$15,000 right there to meet minimum orders and stock your store. You will also want to consider the cost of office equipment, computers and point of sale software which could run a few grand. The rent on the building is 1250 per month but you will also need to pay for some kind of insurance and the utilities which will cost a few hundred more per month. If you plan to offer installation you will also want to have the right tools and if you want to take it a step further with custom installs/enclosures you will need even more tools. No small expense but if you have the money and the drive to do it... go for it.

Are you prepared to pull apart a 2012 vehicle and not damage it? And if so do you feel you have the knowledge or money to fix it if you do?
What about insurance? That will be in addition to rent. And supplies, those are gonna cost a bit to. Plus you have to have a distributor. What knowledge do you have other then "working on a friends ride"? Can you do bypasses and relays? How fast are you?

All these things are vital to running a shop. Along with VERY LONG HOURS! Especially if its just you.

Also, what do you plan to do about school? Are you gonna quite to pursue this venture? And if you are doing this then wouldn't that make the $400 you make in the summer go away?
