Default Calling all carburetor gurus (ATV related)

Bought a quad this weekend.

Motor is rebuilt by a cross country racing team. Runs like a top. One issue: the carb was leaking.

I figured it was a needle/seat issue. I pulled the air intake off, moved the float up and down a few times, and put the intake back on.

The leak is gone, but now I'm having trouble starting the quad. Before i played with the float, it would start up right away, hot or cold.

I ran the battery dead trying to start it. Hooked jumper cables up to my truck and eventually got the quad started. It would idle but would die whenever the throttle was pushed.

Opinions? Its a 2005 polaris predator with the original carb. Ive been considering rebuilding it, but before i get carried away i wanted some input.

sounds like you need to replace the float needle and seat.

it was stuck open before and stuck closed now. at least thats what it sounds like to me.

or maybe the float is sticking some how?

this would be my 1st guess also my 1st investment would be rebuild the carb top to bottom
i owned a predator for about 3 months lol it was fun while it lasted pretty fast quad..
but i rebuilt the carb on my blaster for under 70 bux i think (been a yr or 2 now)

I guess it wouldnt hurt to just rebuild the whole thing. A rebuild kit is only $30 on ebay, plus carb cleaner

pull the bowl, replace the needle and seat, make sure the float has no cracks or leaks, new o-rings and filters, check the diaphragm for rips, tears or cracks., fill the carb with some seafoam or just run some in the fuel.

Yea either you got gunk in there or something is wrong with the float/ needle, i had the same problem with a kawasaki dirtbike i had, it would die as soon as i gave it gas and the float just needed to be adjusted a hair
