Default import fees and duties?

I know there are a few on here that have things ordered from oversea's. A friend of mine wants to order a small CNC router from China (600 lbs). Wondering what hoops there are to jump through? Are the stamps, duties, and fee's expensive to get a larger object shipped in? Should be on one pallet if that matters. Are there certain steps in a specific order?

When I shipped 3 wheeler parts to Canada, I made the buyer payer the import fees and duties, parts were sold for $125 and he paid $90 to get them over the border.
Contact the U.S. Customs and Border Protection, they should be able to answer any of your questions.
877-227-5511 (I think that is still the phone number)
And If the machine costs more than $25k I do believe there are more fees to pay.

There is actually a company that you can go thru, that will handle all of this for you. The duties will be based on how they list the item. Do not let them have it sit in duties storage or you may be liable for fees for that aswell sometimes.

Also watch what router, as there has been some horror stories about them. PM me and I will see if I can find the name of the importer people for you.

I used to ship a bunch of smaller electronics to Canada, but this is a little different. He is buying this to make decorative wood frames, and other things from fancy wood.he is retiring from work in about two months, and wants to get his wood shop in order asap.

Toolmaker,I will deffinately get back to you on this . All I remember right now is that the original model number he wanted was "6090",and now he is looking at the 1212 with a 48 inch square table. Said it was about 2400 or 2500,but I do not have any idea who the manufacturer is? Will know tonight. Thanks for the help.
