I don't know why mainstream doesn't murder these "upstarts" or underground guys. They have the bankroll to do whatever the hell they want. And the buying power to do it at a price.
With their name, clientel isnt even an issue. they can produce their premier 1000rms line for 30-40 per woofer (if that) and make a rather large profit margin on them. However, you then have to account for the fact that pioneer, has a shit load of overhead, so that profit margin of a 200%+- sale per subwoofer gets cut down then cut down then cut down then cut down. that leaves them at a much less marginal profit than one would want. Sundown exists (using it as an example but you could replace sundown with any other small brand) because their overhead is nowhere near that of pioneer, jacob has a rather small amount of employees, he IS the designer, and doesnt have multiple locations. so he can afford to pay a price of $200 for a zv4 (guessing idk their actual cost per woofer) and selling for 350-400 because their overhead is much less and their profit margin is much higher. That is why sundown has multiple woofer lines and continues to innovate and answer everyones needs.
and while both have an initial profit margin of 100%-300% (guessing again), one is 80+ dollars the other is 200+.
