Default How can I prepare for a potential break-in?

Why I'm worried is at the bottom.

My car DOES have an alarm but it only goes off is someone opens the door when they are supposed to be locked. If it is triggered a thief couldn't just rip off the battery cables because I have a battery in the back as well. If a thief really wants what is in my car they will find a way to get it though. At my apartment complex I park in a high traffic area directly under a street lamp; I can see my car out of my window too.

I'm more concerned about my insurance covering a break in of some sort. I have full coverage on my car and renter's insurance on my apartment as well. I've heard of instances where either the car, renter's, or home insurance will cover such a thing. Heck, my apartment got robbed in 2010 and my dad's home insurance covered me.

Would one of those three potentially replace audio gear in my car? If so, how do I go about documenting exactly what was in there? I know the police/insurance people like serial numbers but the majority of my gear doesn't have any. I have pictures, receipts, and that's it.

Any tips for how to potentially ward off this guy before he even tries anything?

go to your car insurance company. tell them u want your audio gear covered. they will tell u it has to be bolted/screwed down to the vehicle for it to be covered. then they will take pictures and it will cost u like 15 dollars more per year for all your audio to be covered. thats what i did with mine.

I forgot to post why I'm worried in the first place.

Today while I was driving home from class I was listening to Lil Wayne's "Pure Columbia" which really excells on my system. I think the notes are like 28hz, 30hz, 34hz, and 48hz. The song is still new to me so I was going full tilt. I was seriously impressed with the output and flex. It was kind of hard to breathe and my sunroof was flexing like crazy. Go listen to it next time you're out and about.

Anyway, I'm slowly rolling by this line of cars on the right because my light was green and I caught the attention of this rather shady looking guy. He whipped his car out into my lane and weaved through traffic to get behind me. He would be riding my ass one second and back off the a bit the next.

I thought it was pretty strange but I'm an incredibly optimistic person so I headed back to my apartment about 2 miles down the road. I really thought that when I turned right towards my apartment he would continue going straight but he ended up following begind me. At this point I was a bit worried so I didn't drive to my actual apartment.

I drove to the opposite side of the complex making two right turns, a left, and then I parked in visitor. He followed me the entire time and when I parked he posted up in the same lot and kept an eye on me. I played dumb and acted like I was on the phone and trying to find a friend's apartment to give off the illusion that I don't actually live there. I got back in my car, drove to the other side, and acted like I was trying to find my friend's apartment again.

During that time I caught a glance at his windshield and saw that he doesn't have a parking pass so he definitely doesn't live here. So, I end op on the other side of the complex and he moved his car again so a central area where I was still visible. At this point I just hopped back in my car and drove off, came back about 10-15 minutes later and he was gone.

My car is easily identifiable... I've had it years and only ever seen 3 cars in the tri-county area the same color (orange); let alone with tint, dual exhaust, and chrome rims. So, if he were to make one sweep around the parking lots he'd find my car pretty quick.

Get a glock sticker for your car. And get a real alarm

I do have a Glock and will have my CCW soon actually. On that note, what are the laws regarding someone breaking into your vehicle? Scenario: you confronting them (in the parking lot), the situation escalates into a fight, and you shoot said theif.

Best tip for car audio enthusiasts is never crank the tunes near the homestead! No car audio stickers unless you park in a garage! Always throw a sleeping bag or blanket over your crap if you have hatchback or suv.
Back in the 70's we used to buy cheapo kraco speaker grills to replace the craig powerplay's, we also replaced the knobs and trim plate on the 2 shaft craig powerplay indash 8 track with kracos! No thief would bother to rip off kraco! It worked! I also wedged a bowie knife in between the front seat's cushion and floor board, it helped me find a thief once

I wasn't bumping at my homestead though :/ This was a couple miles away near campus. I had tint applied to my windows to help prevent people from looking in but you can still kind of tell that I have a 7" touchscreen up there...
