Default who here is a lead at their job?

I have the opp to be one in the area at work which I have been in the same area for about 5 years. Been with the company 7 years. Considered my main area but at times work in other areas when needed or if overtime is avail. I would be in charge of 3 CNC 5 axis multi-pallet horizontal mill machines. I'm already doing the duties and work the like as if I'm already one except 1 thing. I already have a trainee under me so wouldn't be so bad. Part of me says yes the other says hell no. I wouldn't get anything for it moneywise. Guess this would give me the opp to have the exp if I decide to go else wear. Thoughts questions and if you have been one helpful.

If it's not much more work do it for the resume. If it is, it's a tougher decision. However, If you do take it and gain the experience you could shop yourself around later and try to get a raise based on another offer on the table.

Believe it or not guys a lot of the time the people who get the promotions are not always the ones who deserve it but the ones who ask for it. The squeeky wheel gets the grease. Not saying this is your situation but it is certainly a fact in many cases.

I've been lead for a long time. Now I run my own shop.

I agree with above, if you are paid for piece work and it's going to cut into your production you need to be compensated for that. At my first lead position I was a commissioned installer and I negotiated a second bonus based on total shop performance, plus my personal bonus structure as an installer. Started out as only a couple hundred a month but as I moved to different companies it grew considerably.

Take it. If you pass it up you may not get another opportunity. But be prepared to play the political game if you want to further advance your position with the company.

^^True. Who knows if this will pass up or not. My boss isn't forcing it upon me but I'm still pondering the idea. I've been hearing some news from various co-workers about the direction of the company. Basically, the CEO has dragged his used to be co-workers to this company from CA. I have heard they drove the company to the ground there. True or not, unsure. But we are owned by a corporation based in London. There's a lot of turnover rate based on pay and benefits they offer. I don't think this will happen because this company of 300+ employees is profitable....but it could happen, who knows.

People have quit left and right, getting better jobs elsewear, which is why I'm working 2 days extra a week.

I feel sometimes that I'm already a lead just not official yet. People asking me questions, checking their set-ups, check the TLO's (tool length offset), checking loads on station 1 and 2 making sure the dovetail clamps are tight, making sure the proper mill fixtures are the right ones that match the MO (manufacturing order) and set up sheet, and checking to make sure it's the right fixture for that job to run. Troubleshoot machines, fix alarms if the machine alarms out. This to me is a plus. Not many, I would say very few people, know how to troubleshoot their machines. So it's quite a bit but I do a lot so it's not too bad.

Forgot to mention, I'm hourly so no piece work BS. Very few companies do piece work anymore. If our machines were constantly running all the time and piece work was involved, that would be different vs. our machines break down all the time and if we had piece work, we'd be in trouble.

take it for sure! there will be a raise eventually. and if not, you can ask for one because of the title change.

and like said, the resume will look awesome. a promotion at a job you've worked for shows a lot to potential employers.

Im a steward and lead man on my shift. I dont make anymore than anybody else but do get better projects to work on and people just look at you differently. Downside is you are the goto person when things get out of hand and you are expected to be able to sometimes work miracles!
