Goodwill is exploiting their disabled workers. I don't normally care about social issues, but this is extreme.

That is spun in a really bad direction. They make some points but it's much larger than what they speak of as sheltered workshops.

I have an uncle that used to work at the "workshops" making $0.06 an hour doing work that "normal people" could have done. They exploit them and say it's therapy.

I'm just glad that there is some awareness. I have tried with politicians on the state level with no results. They just don't care about the disabled.

Thats pretty f****d up what they are doing. The blind ceo made no sense he pretty much said since they cant do the work a average person can do they do not deserve minimum wage, So than that means since he the ceo is blind he him self doesn't deserve minimum wage yet he is making $500,000 a year.

Yes and no, what was your uncles total year compensation? What I mean by that is what was his cost to live his life yearly through assistance?

Personally, I think pay should be arranged to make as much as possible and still not mess up their federal disability and social security benefits. Hours should be limited to 25hrs maximum per week. (expecting them to work 8-12hr shifts is unreasonable)

As for the CEO's.. they are clearly paid too much.

it was paid for by a trust his parents set up for him. He was at no cost to the state. I see where you are going with this and i see your point. But it is a private company paying people substandard wages based on their handicaps.

part of the problem is that they can not defend themselves and many do not have family to defend them.

Old news, hate to tell ya. Saw this exact crap on the news awhile back. Their pay is so low some cannot afford anything. So they work p/t and the state or government pays the rest. Saw one guy making $3/hr and some change......very sad.

America is the greediest country. Period.

goodwill made 25m in 2011.

if they have 8000 workers making an average of 4$ an hour and have to raise that to 7.5$, working 30 hours a week, that would bring their net income to -18.7m$

they could trim some cost, but it really sounds like that exploitation is keeping them afloat.

Do any disabled people make minimum wage there?

In my town there is a garbage sort/recycle. people there get minimum wage. {I guess some businesses don't know the loophole}
Also, we have Tyson's and the disabled people who work there can make up to $14.50 an hr (that's running the hot saw.. so the guy has to be like Lenny in "Of Mice & Men")... but the starting wage is $9 per hour for even the people that clean the floors.(walk around pushing dry mops over wet spills)
