Default whats your view on car alarms?

okay so my ole lady and I were at an NA meeting at this church the other night and we took her volvo that she JUST got a few days earler and i had just finished insalling an obsidian 12 on an old school soundstream. so where window got smashed and purse with diamond rings and a ton of stuff as well of her iphone and her system i JUST put in that day (they left her eclipse deck tho)

they boke into my van and stole my amp too

so i went out and bout a real nice alarm today for my car since im super paranoid now. we live in a pretty shitty area. poorest town in the poorest state in america. that says alot. so whats your guys view on alarms? needed in the car audio world?

Default That was one of the first things I did to my car

And it's not fancy, or even very loud. Alarm/remote start combo, with actuators in the front doors.. Never hurts to have a little more peace of mind, to me..

for the most part, a car alarm is just as good as the flashing light... It will scare some away, but if they are just looking for a smash and grab, they will do it regardless of the alarm... That being said. I have always installed an alarm before any audio in every car I have had

Also, using different head screws, when mounting amps / eq's, and bolting the enclosure down, from inside the box, can help some. Different security measures, can help, but if someone is determined enough for your stuff...

many threads on this, even a GREAT sticky on how to prevent theft the best u really can...add a 2way alarm, ADD MORE SIRENS...if u can, add one under the dash so when someone breaks in, the siren is blaring DIRECTLY in their face...and as far as security screws, i recmommend them...id rather recone my subs than buy new ones

I personally have a issue with the 2-way paging alarms.. The last thing you want to do, is approach someone while they are doing something. You never know, if they are alone, or are armed, or anything.. If you are that worried, get a small video camera, for either inside the vehicle, or outside, on a 24 hour loop. Then call the cops. It's not worth getting hurt over, IMHO..

I lived in a gnarly parts before and had the same experiences Snoop. Like the last member stated use fasteners that most thieves aren't equipped to remove. I use lock nuts washers and flat head screws. I insert the screws with washers through the back so all that is exposed is the nuts and washers. I tighten them down just enough so that they spin if someone tries to remove. If it takes me 10 minuets to remove or install that's ten minuets you have to call the pigs or catch them your self. I prefer to mount to factory plastic panels so there's another five minuets to remove and it's not grounded either. I insert a bowie knife under the front seats point sticking up slightly into foam rubber under seat to hold in place while butt is against floorboard. This trick worked once for me and the thefts stopped! My crap was getting lifted every week till I got pissed enough to think of it! I even started leaving the car unlocked because I grew tired of replacing windows. The last time it happened the door was wide open and interior light was on but everything was still there! Even the knife which was protruding through the seat! The next day me and the bro in law drove around the neighborhood looking for someone walking with a limp, in about 5 minuets we saw a guy walking with a limp, it was a neighbor kid and when he saw us he tried running I grabbed him and was bout ready to throw him in a full nelson and beat on his peanut brain when the bro in law stopped me cause he was 15. I found the neighborhood bully who was 16 and paid him 20 bucks to kick his ass and get my shit back. I got about half my crap back and split it with the bully! The moral if there is one? A: out of site out of mind B: Alarms keep honest people honest C: if you see baggy pants turn it down D: no stickers that reflect you have a system E: don't have your alarm installed by people that look they would rip you off, I worked at a shop where 2 guys would copy your car and house keys and copy your registration. They also rigged your car so they could disable the alarm F: alarms are only good if you can hear them or they have a remote since most people when they hear an alarm don't even bother to see WTF is going on due to false alarms.

Not the best picture of the fasteners but it will give you the idea...

I've had an alarm on every car I've owned, always 2 way.
It doesn't mean you have to approach them, maybe call 911, but atleast you'll know.
I have the smart start, so my phone will go off if my alarm is set off.

Default I hope your kidding

I think enough people have been shot over their stereo systems..
It's not worth it to me.. Plus, I think some insurance companies will give partial discounts for having a security system installed..
