Default How can I keep lame shops from copying my ideas?

I run ads on CL for basic installs and stuff like that. I get some hits every once in a while.

I was thinking about changing my ads and including some ideas I had, that I thought would be good to mention in the ad, but I don't want sneaky shop owners to read my ad and try out - or worse, completely adopt my ideas.

Or is this something that would get around no matter what, via word of mouth and I shouldn't care about it?

I don't want to say *exactly* what for obvious reasons, but I'm sure anyone who does basic installs on the side would probably know what I'm talking about if you just think about what shops don't do and why people look for cheaper methods such as craigslist.

I say just post it man. To me it's all about clientele. I have never posted an add I've just installed a lot of systems for buddies at half the cost of their first shop system that sounds way better, and after awhile they're hitting me up to do their friends or family's vehicle. The shops are always going to be there and always try to use bribing tactics to get clients (I guess it is there job though). Once people see the work you can do for the price, the word will get around. It has for me anyway and I only do it because I love installing. Also demoing your vehicle that you built always helps lol 😉

But how do you know if shops don't already know what you know? And no one is gonna know what you can offer without knowing what you do unless you put it out there.

yes it does. 2 out of 10 people will tell others they had a good or great experience while 7 out of 10 people will tell others they had a bad or horrible experience.

Ok, I'll just say it cause I know people will still hit me up from time to time cause they don't want to pay $1,100 before labor like the current guy I'm doing an install on.

Basically, one of my main selling points was that I let people watch and learn as I'm tearing the panels off and installing things. I get at least a few questions from most people. The more they ask, the more I can tell they want to learn for themselves. If they don't ask much, they just want to watch what I'm doing, which is fine. I wouldn't trust some random dude on CL either.

I was going to update how I listed everything and focus more on the letting them watch aspect.

All shops I have been to have frowned upon or got mad when I so much as walked into viewing distance of the installer doing the work. The very first one in fact (**** you car audio express in san jose, such a shitty shop). If I had watched them working, I would have seen them run the thin 8awg wire AROUND the damn grommet in the firewall, which was nearly cut by the time I went to upgrade it to 4awg wire. And they charged me $80 for that. It's ridiculous.

I do it to make side cash, help people save money because I was in that position, and to take business away from some shops because most of them seem to operate like this. It's a fun hobby for me and it seems like most shops take the fun out of it for most un-informed people and just try to get as much money as they can out of people and I can't stand that.

Anyways, my main concern was that shops would notice how neat I had worded my CL post, and directly copy it or make a similar copy onto their website/white page listing, etc and take that "letting you watch and learn" aspect away from the side-job guys like me - making them seem more trustworthy at the same time.

I guess this was more of a rant since it got me thinking about how much I hate car audio shops....lol

That's what I try to do. I broke a couple pieces on a $500 job that took a couple days to do. I offered to replace the pieces. Girl didn't care. One of the parts that broke, she looked up and it was a common thing (old plastic dash on a 90's GM, very brittle)

I always offer to make custom panels, install switches, etc, etc and people just usually tell me whatever I think is best...so I just do it the easy way since they won't care. The problem is people don't know what they want cause they aren't into it like I am or other people on here are. It's a bit hard to tell what someone else will like, when you have been through a decent amount of different sized subs in different types of enclosures and you know what you want.

I only had one bad experience. I only made $20 I think, cause I drove about 40 miles each way twice because I thought this guy would pay a little better. Know I make people drive to me (if you don't have gas to get to me, why do you want car audio hooked up? That's how I see it. I had a guy with the poor mans porshe (boxster I think) wanting me to drive to him when his car had barely 30k miles on it...like the guy can't afford $10 worth of gas, but wants several hundred put into a system? I guess some people are just too cheap and try to get the best deal they can..) Anyways, I didn't have all the proper tools and the guys GF was complaining behind the scenes (not in front of me or I would have made sure they were both happy) and I didn't tighten the battery terminals all the way (wasn't done) and I pulled the airbag fuse so it wouldn't go off...had to come back the next day...turns out the guy couldn't wait and called a mechanic to "fix" what I did (even though I just didn't finish it yet). Also said he was going to have to pay $60 to fix the airbag...I told him check the fuse...he did and that was that...I decided this guy wasn't worth driving all that way for and he said he wanted to test his skills, since he saw how easy it was apparently. Never heard back from him, so I'm guessing it was all good.
