Default Bigger battery, big whoop

Tuesday I took the day off to do some further work to my system but ended up getting rained out. I still drove to work to see if I could squeeze in under the canopy for the tractor (which they'd sold a while back) but they just bought a riding mower which was now in residence under the cover.

Skunked I drove home. In GA, as in a few other states, you are required to run your headlights in the rain. I'm a tad absent minded so I forgot about them when I got home. Needless to say, at 1:30 Weds afternoon, my battery was as flat as a pancake. As driving a lead acid battery that dead tends to kill them permanently I hitched a ride to wallyworld and picked up the biggest battery they carry for my application. It's rated at 700A, 800CCA. Nothing major mind you but still quite an improvement over my 450A/540CCA mini-me battery.

I expected an improvement in the dimming I saw at high levels but it's still there. It's improved a bit but I was certainly expecting better from increasing my capacity by well over 33%. Don't get me wrong, with my headlights off, my voltages range from 14.3 to 14.5 at typical listening levels at the battery, I haven't checked with the lights on.

Unknown. It's a walmart battery, they don't bother to list the niceties. Hell, I'm lucky that it's list reserve capacity in any form. I've seen batteries with nothing more than CCA on them.

I got a Duracrap Gold from Autozone for the 92K and it helped out substantially from the walmart that was in it. I stay a solid 14.4-5 on a cold start full tilt, then after driving it around and the heat sets in it stays a constant 14.0-14.1 at the amps input full tilt.

The walmart that was in it was dipping to the high 12s warm.

Prior to the 4 channel it was 75A peak lights on, heater on and stereo on. Can't check it now, traded my meter for my TSS.

I wish I had a clamp meter.

And OT: What would be most likely to cause a parasidic draw in the Blazer? I have the amp unhooked (took the fuse out) so that isn't it. It sat for about a month and the (new) battery was low enough it wouldn't crank the motor. All the dash lights and the dinger worked fine but it couldn't crank.

I had an $80 budget, I'd like to have found something better but it was an emergency. The Everstart MAXX batteries are made by Johnson Controls. The same guys that make the Optima. I at least know that the company that makes them is fairly competent. I just wish they were a bit more forthcoming on their ratings.

Look for a pinched constantly powered wire. A pinched wire can result in a drain if it's pinched against bare metal.

That should be fun locating. I was going to hook my DVOM in line with the power cable to check and see how powerful of a draw there is.

And if your jumper cables slide around the side terminal and the + hits the cross frame that houses the headlights it will light the plastic/rubbery coating on fire.
