Cover letters are a joke. It's a game employers play and usually involves why you want the job/why they should hire you. Another thing that the government may pass the bill on the make it illegal for employers to ask is salary history which I see a lot. It's none of their dam business what you made at the last job or even before that. Only reason why is to see what your skill set is/are and determine the lowest pay possible based on that.
I'm wondering why you haven't filled out a resume before getting the "job"? That's backwords to me.
Keep the resume as short as possible, key words included. Don't include a bunch of misc stuff. Basically the majority tasks/work you've been thru/involved with/completed. A lot of companies typically don't have time to go over 100's of resume's for the same job.
