Dunno man, I remember reading a while back that every police agency in the country was undergoing training in case martial law was declared AND Bush threatened to declare martial law if congress didn't pass the $700,000,000,000 bailout for the banks and lending industry. Doesn't seem too far fetched to me. Remember, the government isn't afraid to trot out troops any time that they think that the American people might want the status quo to change. Look at the student protests in the 60's. They weren't even mildly violent until the government became involved and then they turned ugly and on one occasion, fatal.
Just imagine if people take to the streets protesting the fact that we're going to have to pay the bill on the bailouts. Remember, the people that earn less than half of the money in the US economy pay over 90% of the taxes and the tax increases that this clusterfvsk will bring about will affect those people paying the most taxes. This means the middle classes and down. In other words, you, me and our peers.
If every man, woman and child in the US had to pay the bailout we each have to pony up $2,333.34. That's even counting a few dogs and cats as I'm using 300 million people and we're not quite that big, the US is a few million people shy of 300 million. Ok, now that's not too bad but now start paring that number down to who's actually paying taxes. Kids don't work, they're dependents so that's maybe 40% of that 300 million gone. Then we have those on government programs that are non-taxable, that's a few more percent, let's say 3% or 4%. Then there are those that don't have an income to tax such as housewives. Yeah, that's a shrinking statistic but there are a few, maybe another 3%. Then there are charitable organizations like churches that are tax free, native Americans that are also tax free and the clergy themselves. That's another 4% or 5%. So we pull 50% right off the top for those that don't pay taxes out of that 300 million people and we're down to 150 million people paying the bill. That bill just went up to $4,666.64 per person. But wait, there's more! The upper middle classes will get out of some of theirs since they can afford to use better accounting to write off more living expenses and the upper classes will write off even more with deals and subsidies from our government to keep their businesses in the US. Then you add in loopholes and other tax shelters and they'll end up paying little to none of the debt incurred so that's another 10% of the population not ponying up.
So in the end about 40% of the US population will end up paying that $700,000,000,000 tab that G.W. saddled us with. So, the government is right to be a little nervous. If the working class in America were to rise up en masse in open revolt over the government's stupidity the result would be wholesale slaughter of the rich and powerful. That's the demographic the government really represents after all so they would, in effect, be the ones that the angry villagers would be grabbing up torches and pitcforks and going after.
