Default Electrical Homework Question

Okay. I am working on a take home test for my DC electrical class. I have one question now that should help me with the rest.

So I have a DC source of 12v connnected to a series circuit with 2 resistors. The first resistor, R1= 4 ohms, the second, R2= 8 ohms.

I am asked to solve for
-total resistance
-total current
-R1 current
-R2 current
-R1 voltage
-R2 voltage
-total power
-R1 power
-R2 power

To the question!
so total resistance is 12 ohms, 4+8=12. therefore total current would be 1 amp, because 12v/12ohms=1amp. But! R1 current, 12v/4ohms=3amps. R2 current, 12v/8ohms=1.5amps. So total current, does it equal 1 amp or 4.5? whats wrong here? I believe its 1 amp, but im not sure how to solve for current of R1 and R2. Thoughts?

okay, each of their voltages are going to be current x resistance. therefore the current cant be 3 & 1.5 because then both of their voltages are 12v. and that cant be right.

total current is 1 amp. current is the same across all resistors. so to figure out voltage across the resistors, you use 1 amp as the current and then multiply by resistance.

thats how i remember it when i took my electrical class. may be wrong. but a quick search of series circuit on google should help

In a series circuit current stays the same and the voltage drops change.

you guys are absolutely right. Current does stay the same all the way across. So it is 1 amp across both of the resistors. Thank you, it just skipped over my head. Rep for CSU87 and Bromo!
