You'll be fine just going to a local tackle supply store and asking for some help picking out a nice general purpose rod and reel. You really need to know what you're going to be fishing for though. If you're just going to a pond and putting a worm on the line and throwing it out there you don't need much at all. If you're going to be fishing for 30lb fish it gets significantly more involved.

also correct. the bigger the game your after the more complex shit gets...just like hunting in a sence....you need to know how your game acts feeds habbits traveling paths etc...same with fishing especially if its in a river....

Sweet, something going on that I finally know about! What people have said cannot hold true enough.

I have different setups. I have a large open-face setup for catfishing in the big lakes down here in GA.

For pond fishing(and lake fishing) I throw an Abu Garcia Revo baitcaster on a St Croix Med/Heavy pole for bass

And I absolutely love using the little Zebco 33 for crappy fishing/bream fishing

Well not to sound overwhelming... fishing can get super complicated.

Just go to a local store (not Walmart or some other huge chain) and get help picking a nice rod, reel, and the few tackle items you need (hooks, sinkers, bobbers, bait, etc) that fit your budget and go for it.

If you like it and keep up with it thats when you can worry about the fun stuff.
