Default any aquarium experts?

Got a few questions. Just recently got a 40 gallon tall freshwater aquarium with 3 large african cichlids and a large pleco. What are some good live plants to put in with them?

Also for the saltwater guys.
I want a SMALL saltwater setup. Is it possible to use a 10 gallon for saltwater setup? if so what all is needed?

The fish will probably just destroy live plants.

most cichlids will eat live plants, as will the pleco. Well the pleco will most likely just tear it up for fun... Yes a 10g SW setup can be done, but is rather difficult. It is much easier for things to go wrong in a small SW setup then a large one. I recommend atleast a 40g for SW for a first timer. Also depends if you want to to a FOWLR(fish only with live rock) or a reef tank.

was worried about that.

and as far as a 10g saltwater; im assuming a FOWLR tank is easier to maintain than a reef tank? would assume cheaper as well?

Yes it would be easier and cheaper. However if you want to enjoy a SW tank, making a good initial investment in a 55g, with good lighting, 40+lbs of GOOD live rock, 30-45lbs of GOOD live sand, some good powerheads, and a protien skimmer will make your life easier. Most people give up on SW tanks because they are all maintnance. That is not always the case. But if you cheap out, it can be a bad expierence.

African cichlids like rocks, get you some lava rocks and stack em up. Wouldnt bother will live plants in that setup.

Also, the a 10gal setup is going to be more of a maintenance bug than the 40gal. Usually smaller setups are harder to care for than larger ones.

IME once the cichlids get larger, they stop picking at the plants. Especially if properly fed.

They try to dig to make nests, and just ruin the plants. They dig, and dig, and dig. Well, guess it depends if they're mouth brooders.
