You can get a lot of computer for that price. Mainstreams will be anywhere from 300-600 and will meet your expectations and more. Most PCs are coming with 6-8gb of ram here. Hard drives are 500 and up standard. And processors are quads. I just built a custom PC for a friend, aside from the $600 solid state drive, the cost was around 750-800. Intel i7, 1.5tb HD Blu-Ray drive and DVD/CD burner multi card reader and custom case with 8gb of ram. Mainstreams with this stuff are even cheaper, they get theyre parts in bulk and can afford to drop the price. Alienwares are for gaming and are now made by Dell, stay away from them. Products are good but customer service is crap.

Look for something with at least a quad core processor, AMD will be cheaper but Intel is more reliable. And the more memory you have the better. Both those alone will make a decent multi-tasking machine. Steer clear of big hard drives above 500, the bigger the more heat they produce and the more heat the faster problems will appear. HP is the only mainstream I buy from, anything else is custom made.

Dell Precision if you want to go high end on something with a good warranty. Us 3 IT people got T5500s ($8000 a tower) and pretty much maxed everything we could. Incredible machines, more stout than most people's servers.

For most other people in our office we usually spend about $1500 on a decent Lattitude laptop, and then set them up with a dock and 20" widescreen external. This gives people the flexibility to work from home or out of town.

Your best option is to get an agent if your work plans on buying multiple ones at a time. The agent can work a better pricing solution if you upgrade a bunch at a time. As far as pre-made machines, nothing compares to Dell's service. When we have a machine that is broken, we get on Dell chat, and there is a service tech here the next morning fixing/replacing the machine. No other big box name can come close to that.

(We have about 150 Dell machines and 12 servers currently running here as an idea to the scope of our size)

EDIT: Don't even look into HP machines, they are getting out of the PC business altogether and moving those resources to software development. Even though they are the heavyweight in PC atm, I would expect their already crappy warranty service to deteriorate further when they stop making $8b a year from PC sales.
