It really just depends man...
Flat wire could be a great thing, or a horrible choice, depending on the situation.

I do not mean to avoid answering your question, but there are too many things that could be called pro's or con's depending on the situation they were applied to.

This biggest pro's are the power handling benefits and that flat wire let's you get more wire, and more turns of wire into the same space that you can get a conventional round wire coil. These could be seen as a drawback in some specific cases though.

Dave, could you outline the specific situation in which a round, copper wire is ideal and also when a flat, aluminum wire is preferred.

You're asking me to lay out a list of variations a mile long. There are so many variables to take into account, per specific situation. All types of things will factor into what type of voice coil material we may select for a particular speaker.

Sometimes, you might only be able to use one type of material, in one wire size and shape to get the impedance and size you need for a particular speaker. It is not always about that we want, but more about what we can get... or use.

I have seen others try to stick to a vary general set of guidelines, like a flat wire for SPL and round wire for SQ, but things really do not work out that way.

It's like me asking "which type of tire is best for racing?"

David
I have an Hc motor which I know sound wise and output would make me happy.I also have a sundownz 12-x proto that came with a 3inch round coil that jake said could be built into a really awsome driver with a short 8-layer 42-45mm fw coil.
What im trying to gain is not more power handling but to take said power longer, all day long without going thermal.------Not really a question but just what I got going on.
