Default Quick question about the platform 1 subs

Looking to get into a platform 1 18. I am interested in the high power upgrade that offers a longer voice coil. I need to know what the coil does to the xmax and total excursion of the subwoofer. Anyone who actually knows this info is welcome to answer, I understand the owner is busy.

Thanks

The longer coil adds xmax (and total excursion capability) and adds power handling.

Thanks, I know that part. I'm wondering how much it adds.

Oh, ok.

The standard coil in the PF1 18" would be about 45mm long. The high performance coil would be about 60mm long.

Depending on how you feel like calculating xmax, this would add about 15-18mm total xmax.. which is a lot of displacement on an 18" sub especially.

Edit:
Also, if you are just looking to maximize the xmax for a special purpose, we can actually squeak a little more out of it.

Wow, so with the extended coil the total xmax is 70+mm?? Sold lol.

I'll be getting one once my taxes come back around the end of the month.

Thanks

Edit: no real special purpose, just want to get as much displacement out of it as possible and still work well off 1000 watts.

I feel like I should clarify more for you. No, the high performance coil wouldnt increase xmax to 70+mm.

The 56mm listed on our site is actually a little less than what would be calculated up when using the longer coil. A real measurement would probably show more, but instead of overestimating, it is listed at a little less.

To be honest, 95% of PF1 18" sales have all been with the longer high performance coils, so I chose to list the xmax at what most people would have.

Xmax with the shorter, standard coil would be about 34mm total.

I would urge you to not worry all that much about just one spec though, unless, as I said, it was for a special purpose. There are drawbacks and compromises to be made in every aspect of making a subwoofer, so adding xmax can hurt you in other ways.

As I said, most PF1 18" users are getting the longer flatwound coil. It is worth it!

How would I go about getting a little more info on the tradeoffs involved with this? I am interested in maximizing the 1 kwatt I have available to me, not for an spl comp, just for personal listening. I love to hear/feel when my sub gets down in the 20hz range with authority. I had an Ascendant Audio Havoc 18 a few years ago that was just sick in 4 cubes sealed, and I decided to get one of those again, until I saw your platform 1 subs and the price got my attention. So, I guess what I want is a sub that gets me the most displacement in around 4-5 cubes sealed. I can still get the Havoc again, but am not interested in spending the $420+ that it takes to get one new. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

I think that the Havoc that you had a while ago is smaller than what they sell as the Havoc now. I could also be completely wrong.

As concerned as you are with performance, you want to at least pt for a voice coil that can handle the power that you want to use. Not going with the high performance setup, or other beefier coil ,would be a waste of time.

In your case, I would actually recommend a Platform 2 series 18", custom built with an extended length copper voice coil. That will really shake the ground with 1000w rms! It's more than a Platform 1, but not that much. By the numbers, it doesn't get you more displacement, but it does have a lot more strength.

If you can't quite swing the price difference, the Platform 1 18" with the same copper coil would be the 2nd best pick. It would sound boomier and have less authority than the PF2 though.

Is that the high performance option for the pf2 or is it a custom job beyond that? If it is more custom, can you give me a price for it?

Thanks
