You this is how we do car around here^ thin sheets of wood and then the headliner still fits and looks like stock... if my truck didn't have 80sq ft of deadened on the roof already it would have wood.

I just did my roof last weekend. Its a 96 crew cab Chevy. From the b pillar back it is only a single layer of sheet metal and no bracing. Was about as sturdy as an empty pop can. Picked up a sheet of 3/16 plywood and ripped 7 1/2 inch wide pieces and attached them between the roof ribs with pl adhesive. The next day I pl'd a full length and width piece of 3/16 to the pieces from the day before to tie them all together. I know a double layer of 3/16 doesn't sound like much but it is solid now. Smack it with your hand and u get a solid thud. B pillar forward is double layered sheet metal with around an inch between layers. Drilled maybe 30 holes in the inner layer a shot spray foam up in there and covered the holes with aluminum tape to keep the foam in and let it expand between the 2 layers.
