Default Who's Gone Tweeterless?

In a 2-way config, who's gone tweeterless & compared?

Mid + Tweet. Mid either in the kicks or doors & tweeters w/e.

OR

Low + Widebander: Low in the door. Widebanders in pillars or kicks.

Benefits of either of the two?

With option #2, I could see a chance to increase MB performance (wouldn't need a mid that'd cross real high).

I've tried it. Hated it. I prefer a more laid back upper end but I've never heard it in a successful application. Now...if you were to do option 2 and add a couple tweets crossed really high (8kish hz) and up in the A pillers? That sounds amazing. In my car the fullranges are crossed at 250hz and up (no low pass filter), and the tweets are crossed at 6khz and turned waaay down.

I ran with no tweeters for a number of months. Midbass in the doors crossed at various points up to and under 1 kHz, 2" widebanders in pods on the dash a few degrees off axis. At low to medium levels it would sound very good, but there was always some treble lacking on the kind of metal bands I listen to. The treble was really too laid back at high volume as the widebanders just couldn't keep up. I went back to 1" tweeters in spheres mounted on the A-pillars and heavily attenuated, crossed at 6.3 kHz. The widebanders are still on the dash, but I've been meaning to try them in other places now that beaming is less of an issue with the reduce bandwidth.

Sorry, it's kind of a slang term for a small speaker that plays a very wide range of frequencies. Usually it's 100-300 Hz or so all the way up to 18,000-20,000 Hz. On paper it's a neat idea but they have multiple limitations, such as poor maximum output, a lack of "detail" on the high end at high volume, and the likely suggestion from everyone you give a demo to that you might want to add a pair of 1" tweeters.

The best wide-range "tweeter" that I've ever heard is the Eclipse 80201. Made to be a center speaker, the pair that I had sounded really, really good. I only used it for testing before I sold it and now I'm sort of regretting it.

Many guys recommend the Aura "Whispers" as they call them. They say they work well as long as you don't like a lot of top end "sizzle". Also the Audible Physics are recommended a lot too.

Well right on, I'm trying finally get my front stage sounding better, but loud is a requirement, pretty much all I listen to is metal.
