Default imaging.. why center channels suck... food for thought

when speakers are placed equally distant from each of your ears respectively, you hear and perceive an acoustic image centered on you.

If you achieve this in a vehicle, the result will be the same.
The acoustic image is centered on you. not the vehicle.

And the acoustic image is centered on you regardless of which seat you sit in.

If you use a center channel to try and accomplish this, you will fail.

Using a center channel will make you focus on the center of the vehicle and they are excellent for watching movies if your main screen is in the center of the vehicle but they do not yield a true acoustic image which is centered on each person.

note; if you accomplish true acoustic image centered on each person, watching individual headrest/visor screens will seem natural.

Even if the l/r is louder than the center you will still focus forward ?

if you use a center channel, your goal should be having the sound centered on the vehicle.

when the sound is centered on the vehicle, you no longer need equal lengths from the speakers to your ears because it won't help you achieve sound centered on the vehicle. {no need for kick panels or waveguides or anything else intended to equalize path lengths}

they are two very different goals and the fact people have been trying to combine them is just sad.

a true acoustic image centered on each person can not be obtained using a center channel or a signal processor.

a processor can try to 'fake it' for one person.. but it can't really even do that if a center channel is still being used.

Fwiw, a well imaged and aligned vehicle's "center" will be in the middle of the windshield. Not in front of the listener.

Why, you say? Because if its centered on the listener in a vehicle, the left side of the stage (for the driver in the US) will be terribly squashed. You'll have a very wide right side stage and a teeny tiny left side squashed into the 12"-18" between the boundary and listener center.

you have been taught wrong.

you can't have your cake and eat it too.

it's either or.

equal-distant speakers yield an acoustic image centered on the person. not the vehicle.

you really need to THINK about what I wrote rather than just trying to deny or argue with it.

absorb it.

you will see.

This has been talked about before. Fact is when you build a car for IASCA, the center image is center of dash out over the hood (based on your stage depth). Some people like to make the choice that when you go listen to a band you sit center. Sure if you can afford those high priced seats. Now back to building the car. If you want this equal effect while driving your going to have a hell of a time to make it right. Some judges will look at how far left and right your stage is, then based on that where center should be. Not looking at where in the car it is. Is one way more right then another, that is your choice. I tend to build a car based on what I am looking for our what the customer is looking for.

Actually sonic, taylor is correct. The center image should be equidistant from the boundaries of the left and right stage. By definition. If it is not equidistant from the boundaries of the stage, it can not be defined as the center. Since the boundaries of the stage in a car are limited, it is impossible to get a center image located directly in front of the listener unless the listener is in the middle of the vehicle. The best two seat car in the world uses a center channel and has precise imaging and a proportional, cohesive stage from both seats.

some day you will have a real acoustic image experience and you will regret regurgitating everything you have learned incorrectly.
