Default Why the "loudness" setting sounds better to you.

This is a graph known as an "equal loudness contour" or commonly known as a Fletcher-Munson graph. It illustrates our hearing sensitivity.

A whole bunch of people listened to a 1khz reference tone at a specific volume. Then subjects were given different frequencies at different levels until the given frequency was the same perceived loudness (known as a "phon") as the reference tone.

The "loudess" button on your radio just boosts those frequencies on either end to smooth that graph out. And in case you always wondered why your EQ graph looks like a smiley face, it's because it's a graphical representation of this equal loudness contour. You didn't know it, but you were flattening out the response curve. Good on ya.

Personal note... Fletcher-Munson knows exactly why I hate PA speakers. Lol.

In case anyone is confused, it goes like this...

Take 1khz at 40db for example (right in the middle). It took 90db for 30hz to be the same perceived loudness. That's a 50 f'n decibel difference!! Lol.

The only time I use the loudness setting if a stock headunit had the option(Sound hax of deception...lol ), aftermarket HU I always set my own. I can never keep my eq settings for more than a week, nothing is never clean enough or loud enough.
If I could have all I wanted in car audio for $10 I would want a $1000 worth immediately

Thats why woofers dont damage your hearing! The mids/highs do wayy more work to your ears!
I hate when someone says 'your going to go deaf from all those subs' tards dont know shit!

I find this interesting as well...

This is a very common "target" RTA graph for SQ. Notice how the top end rolls off even though our ears aren't very sensitive to those frequencies. It's interesting to me because when I get demos of non SQ cars, their stupid "tsst, tsst, TSST!!!!!" is all I f'n hear.

Personal note...

These are two different pair of woofers in my doors with EQ set to flat and no tweets or sub. Going by that target curve, you can see where I need EQ for both and which driver set needs more of it.

in laymens terms.... the "loud" button is for boosting signal on lower volume levels,

any high volume levels will be clipped

It's EQ. You think you're doing any less by boosting the crap out of 40hz and 20khz? No.

I wish I had a deck with a loudness setting. I'd Scope it. I don't doubt it WILL clip the signal when used in addition to EQ, but it isn't the evil of evils people make it out to be.

I disagree with the damage it can cause, but never got the chance to scope my Pio 3200dvd to see the results. Its equivalent to saying that turning up the volume will never clip, eventually you will exceed what the preamp can produce if you keep boosting signal.

On another note, this is a good topic to bring up EQ'n and keeping a clean signal. In a perfect world we would have money to buy whats needed. You should actually CUT what is the loudest with the EQ, not boost what is too quiet... or compensate with more power/speakers in the lacking freq range.

It would be analogous to setting your gain on sub amp with a scope using sub level 0, then once everything is set, you go and turn that up to +3... you now can surpass the signal sensitivity you set the amp to, and the sub level control is the same as an EQ. Food for thought because I pretty much leave EQ on flat all the time due to the range of music I play, its never right, lol.
