I was hoping to keep the complete system to under $1500. So far I have $500 invested in the head unit, sub box, and the harness for steering wheel controls. So that leaves me 1k for the rest. I would like to retain my original speaker locations other than maybe adding tweeter is the rear if I go component sets front and back.

I was hoping to keep rears just for the dvd player and kids in the back seat

I assume you plan to run everything from the HU? Or can you retain the OEM amp with that HU?
The Polk MM6501's are a great bang for the buck set. But also look at the JBL ms62c's. Tantric components are comparably priced and have a matching coaxial set. That will be ~ $375 for both sets. I run the Tantrics in my CRX and they're great.
For "true" SQ, most don't even run rear speakers, but I suspect you're not looking for a competition style setup and you probably care whether your rear passengers can hear the music and/or might want that rear fill for movies, maybe? So, if you want rears, get them.
Yeah, I understand I will not come close to what my home setup is , but I will spend a few more dollars to get great sound with no distortion.
I am currently running my stock amp with the HU, but it has to go. From my research the amp filters the music to accommodate the cheap stock Blose speakers. Which at this point leaves a very muddled sound. I thought it was the stock speakers, but upon swapping out the speakers with my nephews kickers the sound quality is still not there.
I will be doing this in stages over the course of a few weeks. I do plan on adding some power with an amp or 2. I would like to be able to pump 200wt of clean sound for those days I need stress relief
