Default Audio Formats...the Good & the Bad...

Ok I have seen many questions on this and myself am wondering the answer.

The broad version of the question I have is:

Would converting from Mp3 to M4a sound/improve the song/track?

A specific instance where this question is being applied is:

Which one of these would sound better and the right one to use? (These are both the same track one being Decaf's version and the other being converted by iTunes to m4a)

Original Decaf version:

iTunes AAC version:

I know some things already such as 320kbps is obviously better than 128kbps, when going up it takes more space on a HD or disc, and CD's formats are better than mp3's.

I have google'd and seen converting to mp3 it trashes or looses quality and what's lost is lost.

No. you cannot convert a file and improve sound quality. For the most part different formats are just for ease of use and a non universal device. Hey if it works better with your device to have them in m4a then by all means. But if it plays mp3s fine then don't waste your time.

from what I've read, going from mp3 to say wav or flac is a waste because the file was compressed and lost quality. however, keepin a file in a very very high bit rate from origination, can be advantageous IF your system is designed to be able to hear the difference. I work for a home AV company, and on a decent set of bookshelves or better, the difference is very noticeable.

you compressed the audio from 320constant to 256vbr, that alone will degrade quality because 256vbr doesnt even allow full 320kbps, more like 288kbps max (don't quote me on that exact #)

unless you are ripping from an album or pirating the music, is pretty much never going to be FLAC/WAV/DSD/ALAC so those mentioning that is rather moot

since the majority download music, just find closest to 320kbps constant and it will be best quality vs file size

So this track with 320kbps constant in AAC converted from the MP3 isn't gaining me much correct?

No... you cannot gain quality by converting. Never going to happen...

Converting your songs with the hopes of gaining sound quality is like me typing the introduction paragraph to a 5 page paper in notepad, then converting it to a word document hoping that the last 4 1/2 pages of the paper will magically appear. Now wouldn't that be nice.
