Default Anyone else

Is anyone else following the Sony push for SQ digital music. I had no idea the files would so much larger. It's about 120+mb per song vs 2-3 for mp3's. I have listened to a few songs that are in the larger format vs mp3's and the difference is incredible. There are a few sites that you can download the larger formatted songs in and it doesn't take too long to transfer them either.

Is anyone else as interested in SQ music as I am?

Music Unlimited | Sony Entertainment Network

They're selling 320kbps AAC files as an option. Compared to 320kbps mp3, higher quality digital music downloads might only sound better to your ears if the studio has mastered the songs with better dynamic range and more high frequency content. Extra high frequency sounds might not even be audible, as our hearing degrades on the high end first as we age. Any differences that you can hear can also be measured, and you can examine the files in Audacity for free.

Also, I would not bother with lossless codecs for music that's entirely synthetic and digitally manipulated. The really good benefits come from music recorded with real instruments and unaltered vocals.

So far the biggest difference has been with the vocals. Hearing the breaths before a chorus and slight pitch changes on longer notes that some producers elliminate.

If you only have the basic 4 speakers in your vehicle then most of the songs will sound flat but increasing that number or even listening with a 7.1 system+ indoors will dramatically improve the experience.

Try Audacity first.

I built some tri-trix mtmtl from parts express and using pioneer HT to power them. Optic signal from ps3 as the source. I hear new things in songs I listened to my whole life for the first time since building them. On some tracks the direction of the singers head can be distinguished, placement of the band and sound stage of unimaginable separation. Great budget setup that kills bose systems.

I'd say I enjoy my home system more than my car, and it was way less money. I've since built 3 more sets of speakers and all were equally impressive. Surround sound music isn't for me, I prefer 2.1 or stereo with full range horns for acoustical music.

I pretty much gave up on DL music, cd quality is where its at. If this format is comparable then it's worth a shot. Thanks for sharing this!
