Default DSP's and why i need/want one....

So, i did a lot of digging around here, and other forums to try and uncover the reason why DSP's are so popular and sought after.

I have yet to hear one, but I am eager to try one of my own to see the outcome from your standard system to one setup for SQ with a DSP. I have never been totally impressed with a radio's basic tuning functions regardless of the make and model, mainly because they only have parameters that are fixed into the radio's overall range of function. Also, lets face it, it just down right lacks any type of SQ in general to start with, as they were not meant for such task.

so i have been looking at the MiniDSP and I have also looked at the RF 3sixty.3 as probably one of the units i would buy. There is also the JBL MS-8 which is a little cheaper than the RF unit. As for the miniDSP, there are many different versions which could be had. this is probably the unit i would choose. miniDSP 2x8 kit | MiniDSP

what I would like to know is, are there any major differences between the ones i listed, that would really make either better than the other, not price being the primary reasoning. Are the tuning functions damn near identical regardless if they have to be tuned via pc, which i assume they would need to be done that way anyways. Size is also not an issue.

any input would be appreciated. trying to do things based on users opinions of every day use, and not overall reviews that i read on websites. Thank you

have you thought about the audison? i installed the JBL MS-8 in Beerdrnkr's Veloster and he changed it out soon after and tried the 3sixty.3 and the precision power DSP hes probably a good guy to talk about them with he has tried quite a few of them.

i did not think of that one. like i said prior, price really isnt that big of an issue. i just want to get something that will last and i can use in just about anything, because not every car will be able to have the headunit/source unit switched out(which ill try to avoid as well). ill have to look into that one.

I primarily went off the most commonly used ones right now, which seem to be the the RF and the MS-8 as far as i can tell currently. the MiniDSP is something i ran across a while back and seems very affordable and can contend with some of the higher end units.

well the audison bitone is about $1000 so i think at that point price can become a factor. i personally like the ms-8 and can be had at a very affordable price.

So has anyone played with the ppi dsp or the soundstream harmony recently? They seam like a better all in one unit than the minidsp 2x8. Want to pick one up for the next project come next month.

Still leaning towards just starting with a 2x4 minidsp. But the soundstream harmony looks nice.

Been seeing a lot of issues lately with the ms8 so I don't think I want to take any chances with it. The rf 360.3 have also seemed to have a few issues of there own to. Not sure where to begin looking again.

What issues would those be? I'm a little bit out of the loop on these things lol

The jbl ms8 people have been getting faulty units. And it's not just one, there are people who have gotten multiples in a row currently.

As for rockford, they seem to have issue with the eq setting reverting and connection issues with current gen pc's here and there right now. Probably all easy non-technical fixes imo.

Another reason why the harmony or ppi looks good to me is optical input, which I could use coming from my source.

The Rockford has an optical input as well. The Soundtream/PPi units are not of the same sound quality as the JBL and Rockford. I have the 3sixty.3 and an Alpine 701 and like them both. I haven't used the optical input on the Rockford yet but on the Alpine I do notice some digital distortion sometimes while increasing the volume while using the optical input.

Look on diymobileaudio.com forums and they have lots of info and comparison of the processors. There is always a minidsp for sale on there, I have heard to stay away from the SS/PPI though. Lots of people have had trouble with the Audison as well and have bad luck with the tech support guys too. As for why you need one, if you are running an active 2 or 3 way on your highs and or if you want to image the sound properly they really help. If you are just a typical basshead a crossover is all you need, since bass boost can be done on the amp or crossover and your treble adjustment will work for the highs. But a processor it self is not going to give you good sound quality, you still need a clean source, good speakers and have them mounted properly for a good start. Unless you need one, I would spend the money first on better amps and speakers.
