Default HT issue

I honesty don't know where I should post this thread, so I put it here.
Has anybody experienced a volume decrease in their HT set up when using the aux input to their HT receiver?
I have a $350 Onkyo and it cranks when I'm listening to FM radio. However, when I am using any of its auxiliary inputs, the volume is noticeable lower. I've also noticed the same phenomena on other audio equipment.
Has anyone else experienced this?
Could it be crappy cables?
Any suggestions?

I don't remember so I'll have to check when I get home. It is an older model, before Circuit City went belly up. It does not have any special inputs except optical input.

I think I'm gonna try a line driver for car audio. Is that a bad idea?

It doesn't have a level control. I don't know the model. I'll have to check when I get home.
Its freaking annoying that I have to crank the volume to over 3/4 to get some umph when I'm watching a movie.
