Sexy.. I actually had a daydream about a driver like that at one point, after I read about the large format spider and surround combo your using. XBL^2 drivers dont' need strong super tight supensions anyways since the motor will control the driver beyond xmax, it works out really well in your case, least it did in my head lol.

Most XBL^2 drivers have been plagued with issues, all things considered.. The early brahmas and XXX's and avalanches are low end monsters, but both have inductance based roll off. Having used all 3 none of them really need a LPF as they roll off sharply above 60hz anyways.

The later Brahmas added shorting rings, but had quality issues when they switched build houses.

The CSS line simply isn't a well designed driver.. Even with a "good" motor topology, the execution just isn't all that great..

Exodus Audio was doing some nice ones for a few years, what the newer Brahmas would have been like if quality wasn't a factor. However they are out of business and Kevin never got to push the envelope on what was possible now, with better baskets and spiders that are readily available.

SI's BM's are solid drivers in both iterations, but a different niche being completely SQ and shallow mount oriented.. Something more akin to a z4 with XBL^2 would be killer, but the motor has to be ridiculously strong with a large coil to keep powerhandling where most people want.. Probably even a 4inch coil at that point (speculation on my part there though)

Another daydream.. How much would it cost to get some Z4 baskets and spiders turned into passive radiators? With all the extra travel you gain though, you'd likely only need 1 compared to 2 standard ones.. Im guessing since the basket isn't off the shelf, it would be more than most in cost., but by how much... Feel free to PM on that one if needed.

Dave @ PSI can buy parts from me to make you a PR -- we don't typically do all that.

But yes... stay tuned and I'll eventually break into the XBL^2 car audio market

KLIPPEL

Industry standard test equipment for measuring pretty much any loudspeaker behavior; static and also over stroke and power.

If you were to put the zv4 or nightshade v3 suspension and cones on a nightshade v2 motor. How would the graphs look?

The CMS graph and FS graph shapes would be identical as that is purely related to the suspension -- the Qts graph would depend on what coil was used; but would be similar.

Basically the "platform" of the big spider and mega-roll surround is responsible for the big differences I am showing -- so it could be applied to any motor.

So not having the extended pole mostly affects the qts? I'm wanting to put the new 10" parts on a few of the nsv2 motors I have, but still deciding whether to wait for the spl option or not.

Right; the extended pole evens out the BL curve and provides more linear x-max which reduces QTS shift.

Not to thread jack. But why not re-invent the "monster motor"? Stay in the 300+ bl range..but obviously a lighter coil. There's still interest in big motors...sure smaller motors can do very well in applications..but theres still benefits to having big motored subs..besides bragging rights! Especially now youve engineered spiders and cones and a basket that could accentuate a big motor.

The NS v.3 is the successor to the Monster motor.

If I sleeved it out in steel it would get a 300+ BL^2/RE figure; but the inductance is super high that way.

The TEAM motor will get crazy high BL^2/RE with the right coil.
