If I sleeved it out in steel it would get a 300+ BL^2/RE figure; but the inductance is super high that way.

The TEAM motor will get crazy high BL^2/RE with the right coil.
I was asking murphy the other day about motor bl..and he too said its pretty much coil dependant. Are we talking impedance..or coil dimensions. Can you briefly explain to me how and why this takes precedent over the size of the gap..in which I've always thought to be the deciding factor.

BL = Product of B field (magnetic field generated by the motor) and L (number of windings in the gap)

So for a given B field -- say a fixed gap size -- you can cram more wire in there various ways to increase the BL product.

You can also expand the gap and cram in ~2x the windings -- you won't lose half of the B field so you have a net gain in BL by doing so.

The problem with adding more and more wire is two-fold ; inductance and mass. I was able to resolve inductance with a pole sleeve in the NS v.3 with fat coil option but I did lose a good bit of the B field as the sleeve is 1mm thick so the gap expanded alot since the aluminum has no magnetic properties it acts like air to the B field. It still has more BL than a thinner coil.

Mass is unavoidable by adding more wire if you keep length the same. So the fat coil in the NS v.3 motor is still heavy.

-----

Also... if you look simply at BL alone; you can make it higher by going to a higher impedance coil -- smaller wire = more wire in the gap. So the real figure is, of course, BL^2/RE

-----

Here is an example for you :

* BL^2/RE = 495.40
* LE = 6.261 mH
* Xmag = 30.33mm (82% BL)
* 4-Layer Coil x 100mm long with 107.9mm top plate ID

* BL^2/RE = 710.46
* LE = 12.634 mH (this would be a big problem)
* Xmag = 18.54mm (82% BL)
* 8-Layer Coil x 49mm long with 114.0mm top plate ID

Notice how the B field decrease as I widened the gap but there is ALOT more wire in there in the highest concentration area between the top plate and pole.

I avoided extra mass by making the coil half as long; but Le went pretty wild and we lost a ton of linear x-max.

I can largely fix the LE problem with a pole sleeve; but we are still left with a coil 1/2 as long so linear x-max suffers and we lost some of our BL advantage.

This is great. What program is this? I can see there is no "one motor do it all" you gain something beneficial..you lose something beneficial! Where's the middle ground

Like these two, some of this explaination(and ones on other forums as well) went right over my head

Other's mention that they sound "different" than traditional drivers. For the potential non Klippel savy users, what is "different" sounding/experience/sensation about them to the ear?
