There passive then there's active. Active mean you don't have any external crossovers like most components have. the crossover point are all controlled either by the head unit or amplifier in an active system

Simple answer:
Adjustable crossover frequencies and slopes as opposed to the set ones you would get hooking your components to the crossover than came with them.

Not even going to try to go further in depth because I'm terrible at explaining things. You'll end up with more questions than you started with lol

Yes. You would use crossover slopes and frequencies that are being controlled from the deck and scrap the crossovers that came with the speakers.

Set all your amps to full range and let the deck control what is being sent to them.

Yea theres amps that are active capable like sax 100.4,crescendo c 1100.1 ppi 900.4.aslso hu like alpine 9887,80prs etc.active means you can control freqs on your mids and tweets.passive you cant do this all you have is a crossover network with crossover points already set for you from the manufacture.example of active: you can cross your mids to play from 80hz to 4khz then your tweets from 4khz and up.

active means you use a powered circuit to adjust xover points and slopes

passive uses a non powered circuit

for instance the headunit has a power supply and can adjust the xover points

the component set or coax speaker in your door has a passive xover it uses caps coils and resistors and has no external power supply besides the music its self coming from an amplifier
