Custom DD Z help

Ok, so I currently have the sub on the right with the red pole piece:



Just bought the one on the left. They have different impedance coils, so I'll have to re-cone them.

I have a few different options. I can leave them as 12's and have plenty of box volume and port area, or i can make them as 15's and be kind of pushing it as far as box volume. I'm not sure exactly how much room I have. It's a weird space, but I could measure later.

My question is: How do you make subs perform better in smaller ported boxes and not need more box volume? I know Sundown subs are fine in smaller boxes. @Sundownz; can you explain?

I was thinking really loose spiders, but I will be running a lot of power.

I will be running them on the T 20.2

I'm thinking about .7 nominal, so should I do .7 coils or 2.8 coils? I have heard that wiring in parallel yields higher SPL than wiring in series, even when the same impedance is reached.

@Jeffhulbert50; any input? Could you build them?

I will have both 12" & 15" baskets and a pair of both 12" & 15" Composite cones.

Your best bet will be to see how much room you have to work with and use whatever would fit in that space best.

dd's already like small chambers, they just like gigantic ports to offset that.
I wouldn't try to improve on the Z DD has a ton of man hours into that sub and years of testing.

Maybe five or six cubes gross. Port could be external though, and will be inverting one sub. I'll have to take some serious measurements and find out for sure. I know 5 cubes would be too small for 15's, but I'll see how much box volume I could possibly squeeze out of my car.

That's very true, but I got them used for half of new cost. I could send them in to DD to be re-done, but that would not be the most cost-effective. Also, they'll most likely want me to put the new style basket on these motors, which I hate.

I know I want lows more than SPL in the 40's. Definitely want a lower FS. With composite cones, I'm thinking a beefier copper coil than the stock Aluminum one. I don't want ridiculously stiff spiders, but I can't go too soft and still be able to use all the power I have on tap.

I don't know. May call DD tomorrow and see what they can do for me. They've been very helpful in the past.

That's actually the complete opposite if you want more than a burp box.

New basket has a larger spider.

Soft suspension and Kevlar cone will lower fs and the enclosure size. Also reduces power handling but unless you're planning to run over 5k per sub, you'll be fine.

Yes, much larger, but I hate the look of it. I don't want to spend all this money on something i hate to look at.

Yup, that's what I was thinking. Thanks!

I'll wire to .7 and I've seen this amp clamp over 8k rising above 2 ohms. So realistically, they'll see somewhere between 3-4k each daily if my rise isn't too terrible.

Didn't you have some Z's?
